Well talking about brutish, cold war look, I think Udaloy is even better.

Crobato, would you please explain more about the radar on the back?

I have a "dumb" question

On the improved Sovremennys, they removed the aft gun. I'm curious as to what the space is used for? Additional helicopter pad?

In 138 and 139 the Hangar is fixed compared to the telescopic version in standart 956s. This means that the helipad needs to be expanded (as the fixed hangar eats it away) and only direction is to th rear. Is this made becouse there's no need for the aft gun, or becouse the fixed hangars obvious benefits which means sacrifice the rear gun, I dont Know?

I am not really sure what the new radar is, I'm not that much of an expert on Russian naval vessels. My guess is that the radar provides OTH surveillance on the back of the ship, and it reminds me of the Garpun radar onboard the Talwars as they are set in exactly the same location relative to the ship. I am not sure if I am correct that I heard that this radar uses ductile refraction for OTH surveillance, compared to using troposphere backscatter like the Mineral ME radar.

I don't know the detail of improvement on 138 and 139. I just said "big change", it can be seen from the pix right? For Ukrine engine, of course they won't announce they won't sell it to China because of US pressure. But China had enough of this kind of thing, like the Falcom from Isreal. So I said "may" have this kind of problem. Otherwise why China built 115 and 116?

I'll go read your posts on ship building now, thx.
I wouldn't think it's a big change just because other people told me so.

Simply put, the main change is the replacement of AK-630s with Kashtan + the radar for kashtan (that's what that second radar that looks like bandstand is for). Removal of 2nd AK-130 for a fixed hangar. I really don't think the change in the range of Sunburn is that significant since the changed flight path just makes it detectable at an earlier stage, making it even less of a threat against US carrier group. The shtil-1 upgrade is probably most significant and that's the one I'd like to see on the first 2 also. Other than that, there were supposedly better electronics and upgraded versions of the original sensors. So, the main improvement comes in air defence, but ASW and ASuW didn't improve that much. Fundamental problems remain with Sov, and they are not going away.

Ukraine is not the same as Israel. One relies on America for its survival and the other is just looking west to loose some Russian influence. Pakistan and China are pretty their main customers, they can't loose that.

Why did they build 115/116? Probably as an insurance policy for 052B/C, it was suppose to be ready before 052C, but due to the slowness of Dalian and the slowness of delivering rif, 116 is still not commissioned. And really 051C is pretty much a 70s USSR concept AAW. China needs to move in the direction of the 21st century style AAW like type 45/Horizon class.

my post on engine was in China naval power, not civilian shipbuilding, you read the wrong thread.

I thought the Udaloy class looked "sleek" in comparison to the Sovremenny, LoL.

I don't think the PRC is going to purchase more Sovremenny's. But upgrades to existing ships is likely.

Just an amateur armchair admiral's opinion. If I were doing the upgrade, I'd replace the front SAM launcher with VLS system. The aft SAM launcher would be replaced with MEDVEDKA-VE (6-cel VLS?) and the aft gun removed to make space for above-deck installation of TAS and acoustic decoy equipment. Replacing the 4xCIWS with 2xADGMS is good too.

The Sovremenny's primary role was anti-surface warfare. But what's the likelihood that the destroyer would get a chance to fire its 4-ton SSM's at enemy capital ships these days? The cold war is over and the trend is moving toward multipurpose platforms.

Got you, tphuang. Now I think you are right. There's no point to buy more Sov unless PLAN thinks add 2 more destoyers over like 18 in 5 years really matters.

Not saying that the Type 054A isn't a world class modern Frigate but equal of the Sov in terms of overall capability it's not.

Perhaps ship to ship, but not for bang to the buck. The two new Sovs were overpriced, probably left a bad taste in the Chinese mouth, even though the PLAN seems quite happy with them, as they were with the other two older ships.

If anything what could get the Chinese interested is being offered very tempting prices for the new Sovs, as well as additional political perks (e.g. Siberian oil). Though I don't think the Sovs should be high in a priority list even if Putin did ask China to help resolve a massive trade imbalance. If there is a shopping list, IL-76s (already on contract---the Russians will eat their losses on this) comes first, followed by Su-33s, and maybe even Su-35s. In the naval area, the Lada subs should come first, as the article indicated, getting more Ka-28s and Ka-31s, and for ships something with better ASW armament. Perhaps a modernized Udaloy for example, but then again, they may be still able to improve the ASW fit on the Sovs.
