I liked a statement advocating the removal of the like button. Paradoxical.

I think there are too many reaction buttons as it is; I'd support it going back to just like. There's enough passive-aggressive needling that goes on in this forum, we don't need to add rolleyes emoji reactions to it.
Posting 'reactions' to show disagreement is for sheep. It's a herd tactic.

If you wanna "shake your head" then post your argument in response, so that your view is also open to criticism.

This proposal only lowers the level of discourse.

p.s. I'd even support removing the "like" button for the same reason, on principle, if it was proposed, even though I "like" it.

I agree. The wide array of emojis is generating useless passive aggressiveness. For example, in the contentious thread about Ukraine, I am noticing some specific users use the laugh emoji to mock other users without contributing anything to the discussion. So, I propose that we cut down the number of emojis to two: a like emoji and a disagree emoji.

I don't see the issue? I don't contribute to the discussion most of the time because it's either someone said what I wanted to say and I don't want to dogpile that discussion or I am interested but don't feel the need to say my opinion on that piece. It's like any regular debate to me.

The major issue is that emojis are associated with certain feelings about a post. It can be used to rile people up, and that is not the point of this forum.

Excuse me. But I did not intent to post anything as I am really enjoying the high quality discussions and I have nothing good to add. I am a real person not a bot. Btw I am a she. Thank you.
Also how are you online 24/7? Are you using a bot that uses your legitimate account to react? That is the literally the only way for you to constantly react so quickly.

Fair point but I want to say the times have changed and the nature of this forum being Chinese military focused as well as Chinese focused in general and having a large pro china user base, this is just the natural evolution and this is only become a stronger sentiment seeing the next decade or two.

I understand that. But discussion is a major of this forum’s livelihood. We aren’t Reddit in which users just downvote others to oblivion without providing an argument why. If you can’t argue why you disagree or you feel like you don’t have the time to do that, just move on and don’t rile that user up. It worked well in the beginning but it is getting abused.

People have a choice to post or not to post. We have many lurkers in this forum or any other forums. It is up to them to decide if they wanted to contribute passively or actively.

On the one hand, you MODs demand posters to contribute and post relevant posts. On the other hand, you try to force people to post. You can't have it both ways. Give people some space and allow people to engage passively. I just don't see how emoji would affect the quality of posts and discussion.

I do agree emojis sometime can be annoying. However, if members would react emotionally due to emoji, then such members don't have much self discipline to begin with. I am doubtful such members would contribute much to this forum anyway.

Fair enough. However, I do want to note that I am not arguing from the point of view of a moderator, but from that of a regular user. So please don't view my opinion as if it represents the moderators' stance. If I were to represent them, my text would be completely different. I personally believe that laughing at another's post that is more or less serious without any context is just irksome and low. That is why I feel like the emoji system is already too much.

I don't disagree that laughing emoji using in a certain way could be offensive. And many members aspire for even more professional forum.

However, there are way more lurkers and passive members than active and contributed members. Emojis allow them to engage in a way. I think emoji is a minor inconvenience that we should tolerate for the sake of this forum.
