It is absolutely weak in the sense that modernization has not been completed and still has a long way to go. We shouldn't let pride get in the way of objective analysis.
Frankly, I would say that in many aspects China is severely lacking in what you would expect from the largest economy in the world by PPP. I'll grant that buildup and modernization started relatively recently in historical terms, but for the longest time the military was simply not taken very seriously in comparison to economic growth. That was a mistake the Song dynasty made and it cost them.
In other words, no oil purchases especially from Iran and Russia.
Maybe so but China was on such bad footing for so long that the fact they caught up to this extent shows the world really strong they are. Think about it, their modernization was in such dire straits and they still fought the USA to a standstill during the Vietnam war and even the Korean War that one can only imagine what China will be like the. They get themselves full sorted. Sure China didn’t focus as hard on The military side of things on the surface but really even the USA and it’s billions of dollars on reinforcing failure while generation fake profit seems to show to me that the USA for all of bluster has a pretty weak military that only specializes in short conflicts where they can beat up a nation with no air cover or any sort of military stockpile. China right now is not the Song Dynasty and in terms of pride, the western world and its crazy media has China completely beat by a factor of ten. Even if China is carrying out its military
Modernization now as we speak, we shouldn’t delude ourselves in thinking that China is so weak that the USA can defeat China in a real fight when, They couldn’t even defeat Russia that was supposed to be running out of missiles any day now. I believe that China is very strong but as you say, China still should continue to improve itself regardless and ensure complete success rathe then partial as in the end, the result alone matter and if the USA becomes mad max while China becomes the future of the world, that result will wash away all of bullshit in one go

You have to adapt to your enemies. The Song primarily faced off against military enemies who couldn’t run an economy worth a damn but could put 50,000 cavalry at your door steps within a moment’s notice. Neglecting your military against such opponents was foolish.
The West however is primarily a technological and economic threat; their militaries are formidable but can be dealt with using asymmetric means. But lose the economy / technology race against them and it’s only a matter of time before they orchestrate your collapse. The USSR is instructive in this regard.
My biggest concerns for China in its contest vs the West are economy related as I believe that as long as China gets its economy ahead and keeps up on technology, eventually the West will capitulate.
