The thing about war, especially large conflicts like world wars, is that once they start, it is very, very difficult to stop unless one side is conquered by the other. Once the bullets fly, the americans will not care why the war is happening, only that they wish to win for the sake of national pride, even if they have to eat bitterness for a while- and this may last for a while, until a 1917 type Russian Revolution occurs.
The American Elites probably calculate that they need a war to galvanise a society on the brink of civil revolt, especially since their dollar hegemony is ending and they will no longer be able to subsidise social programs with current existing federal incomes. This is the reason why there is so much budget and funding for war and weapons but none for social programs nor for the homeless. the American Elites don't just want a war, they need a war to survive.
China fending off the US from east Asia and the Pacific is not enough, IMHO since the Anglos will keep coming unless properly deprived of the tools to enact their aggression. Losing Asia means losing face for the Americans and in the mindset of either the boomers who will die soon, or the racists like Pottinger and Navarro and Thiel who would rather commit suicide and bring the entire world with them than to accept being a normal nation....the choice is obvious.

As for the media in Singapore, the English language press, ST and CNA, regurgitate western propaganda uncritically when it comes to non-domestic issues. Personally, I consider them captured. The Chinese paper Zaobao is much more balanced.
Shouldn't come as a surprise, there's no viable proxy in the Pacific, there are no direct land routes for shipping weapons into any of the supposed poxy. Even if the ship convoy cannot be interdicted, the port facilities can be disabled or captured to make rearming extremely difficult.
On the other hand, the target of PLA military preparation has primarily being winning against US military intervention, not defeating any of its proxies.
