In the West, the success of the Little Mermaid has an element of payback. It goes to show that the history can be transcended.

Well, China didn't enslave black people for the colour of their skin, nor did they create colonies and subjugate the people on their lands, so Chinese people don't carry this baggage.

Black native woman falls in love with white male aggressor who destroys her home and kills her mother.

instead of responding with indignation and fury she instead helps the white male aggressor escape punishment for his sins, betrays her people and throws away her mermaid identity for the identity of the aggressors.

Triton is a coward who permanently sells his daughter to the aggressors who killed his wife.

Maybe the "spy base" might be something else, maybe like a ship supply depot or "weather" balloon testing facility ;)
