I agree with some of what you said. However, I don't agree that most Chinese people see Japanese people and British people as crazy. In my opinion, China is so strong because the Chinese mindset is one of the pragmatic in the world. I agree that most Chinese people despise the Empire of Japan and Japanese ultranationalists, but based on what I've seen, most of us don't project those feelings onto contemporary Japanese people. When the Manchu people conquered China in the 1600s, millions of people died. They then imposed their hairstyle on the Chinese people for hundreds of years. Are contemporary Manchu people seen as crazy because of that? No! In fact, one of the most popular symbols of Chinese patriotism today is Wu Jing, a Manchu person. Are Mongolian people distrusted in modern China? Again, the answer is no. Instead of wrongfully encouraging hatred against modern Japan and modern Britain, Chinese society is focusing its energy on the most pragmatic course of action, strengthening its military and ensuring that China cannot be conquered again. In my opinion, such hatred is a huge waste of time and energy. Just look at India. Just go to any forum populated by Indians. Their hatred of Muslim people and Chinese people is immeasurable. It is almost like a part-time job for many of them. In 2023, the Mughal Empire is still a mainstream topic in India. That's absolutely absurd to me! All of the time and energy spent indulging in that hatred is completely wasted and is probably one of the reasons why India's leaders can control their people like puppets. No, brother, you can’t compare Russian and Japanese imperialism like that. They are essentially the same and you can’t rank them as good or bad based on the different levels of harm they caused. This is a matter of principle that cannot be shaken. Moreover, it is a historical fact that the Tsarist Empire seized more than 1.6 million square kilometers of land from China. It is the enemy that seized the most land among all the great powers. The vast majority of China’s elites in modern times have recognized that Russia’s aggressive genes pose the greatest threat to China. It just didn’t have the opportunity to fully exert its power in history, but it still seized one-sixth of our land area with only part of its power. What we discussed earlier was mainly about whether the modern Russian Federation must atone for the sins caused by the Tsarist Empire. Some people openly advocate that Chinese people should equate the Russian Federation with the Tsarist Empire or the Soviet Union and demand that Chinese people face today’s Russian Federation with the perspective and attitude of treating the Tsarist Empire. This is obviously unreasonable because the Tsarist Empire, whether its royal family, elite backbone class, government institutions or the entire Tsarist imperialist system, was smashed by the Russians themselves more than 100 years ago. What can Chinese people do? Do it again after more than 100 years? The Russian Federation has been a good neighbor from its birth to today, at least in the eyes of Chinese people. We cannot criticize its present life with its past life.
As for Japan and Britain, you are partially right. However, I need to explain that most Chinese people do not hold a grudge against contemporary Japan and Britain. This is because the Communist Party has taught us to separate the interests of the people from those of the imperialist government. Mao Zedong famously stated: “The Japanese and Chinese people are both victims of Japanese militarism. The enemy of both peoples is Japanese militarism.” I won’t evaluate whether this dichotomy is right or wrong. It allows most Chinese people to treat Japan and Britain with an attitude of “They are crazy and may have an episode at any time, but as long as they don’t have an episode, we can be cool, but it doesn’t mean I forget that they are actually crazy.” I am a native of mainland China and have lived in Wuhan all my life. It’s common for young mainland Chinese to watch Japanese anime while criticizing Japanese right-wingers. It’s normal that you haven’t met a Chinese person who wants revenge. But forgiveness? No one can forgive things like the Japanese invasion and massacre of China or Britain’s forced opium trade. It’s too difficult. All we can do is hope they don’t have an episode so we can be cool.
Unless they die and are reborn twice like Russia, we might be able to forgive them.
On the other hand, I have never met a Korean person who hasn't said something bad about Japan in public. Koreans suffered under Japanese occupation, but let's be honest, their suffering was no worse than ours. If anything, our suffering was much worse. I dated a Japanese girl in the past. I didn't care about her ethnicity at all. I only saw her as a cute Asian girl whose company I enjoyed. One day, my Korean friend told me "I can't see myself dating a Japanese girl because I'm Korean. I hate them." Another time, another Korean friend of mine yelled "f**k Japan" during a World Cup match. When I asked him why, he said "I hate Japan because I am a nationalist." To them, hating Japan (and now China), seems to be as natural as breathing, but honestly, I don't think they have many reasons to hate modern Japanese people. It is as if their brains are corrupted by hatred. Like I said, I don't know a single Chinese person who acts like this. That makes me so proud to be Chinese. In my opinion, the pragmatism of the Chinese people is one of the main reasons why China is so strong in 2023.
