Did this whole balloon thing end up being an elaborate salame slicing operation by the prc?
I still think it's a genuine accident and not planned because who could have predicted that reaction.
However once it was clear that the US was spitting the dummy the CPC quickly decided to take advantage of the situation. The decision to very publicly notify Latin American countries to express regrate is part of it and Costa Rica playing along and answering back with "sure no problem, it's just a drifting weather balloon, thanks for the heads up" earns it some brownie points, as does Venezuela's condemnation of the shot down.

It kind of reminds me of that one time when Zhao Lijian posted that drawing of an Australian soldier slitting the throat of an Afghan child and it made Scott Morrison blow his top, only it's even less intentional this time. Once you get a disproportional and irrational response out of the other guy they make themselves look like a clown on the international stage.

The call for returning the balloon debris is like an international diplomacy equivalent of rubbing it in by saying "you mad bro?"

China tried to warn the US what happens if you dig too deep into this balloon incidence ;)

They are making this known now because Trump and friends used the Spy Balloon fiasco to destabilize Biden’s position. This is a way of saying “you did even worse Trump”.

I don't have high expectations.

Remember when China sent millions of vaccines to Turkey while the West was hoarding them? Remember how grateful Turkey was? Yeah.

Ayways, the good news is that, apart from your occasional anti-China statement, the Turks are still pretty quiet about China and haven't done much. So imo the current Turkish policy is okay.

Just don't expect any gratefulness from Turkey, because it's not coming. The best one can hope for is more anger amongst the Turkish people at the West when they send little help, which would be useful to prevent a rapprochement from whoever leads Turkey after Erdogan.

There was pro-China sentiment, it was just that not much was done to capitalize on it.
Perhaps the most significant sign of camaraderie between China and the Turkish opposition media during the COVID-19 pandemic was a popular meme: “Atatürk paid for it.”99 According to the story, China refused to accept payment for a shipment of 2 million COVID-19 test kits that arrived in March 2020 in order to thank Turkey for the medical aid it sent to China during a 1938 cholera outbreak.100 This phrase—which was based on a falsehood101—spread like wildfire over Turkish social media. Backed by some of Turkey’s well-known journalists and academics, the “Atatürk paid for it” trend became one of the most memorable memes of the pandemic era in Turkey.102 Although not invented or spread by China’s propaganda establishment, this story boosted China’s standing by giving it undue credit while flattering millions of Kemalist-leaning Turks.

You know the weird thing about this all is this:

- Both China and Taiwan send help

- Both India and Pakistan send help

- Both Russia and Ukraine send help

The world is making it more difficult for Erdogan!
It is not weird at all once you understand it. why do you think India will like him except Erdogan policies make India prefer partner to many Arab and European countries. some other countries want to make him pain in German butt. There is no replacement for German engineering thats why there is that cautious attitude in Mideast. just from looking at map. Kurds in Syria seem less impacted.
it will be hard to resist much stronger military action to balance things out.

As much as one might joke around how India acts, its still the world's 3rd largest economy.

The methods used by US to subvert small third world nations or ones where there is institutionalised American corruption will not work well on India.

US is not rich enough to buyout India completely, and India's institutional corruption is its own, not America's.

Under the nationalist Modi regime, India is mostly interested in eating from every single table in the room. They're powerful enough that they can't really be forcefully stopped.
Of course they can corrupt India. After all USA have the biggest economy in the world and they managed to corrupt their country very well from top to bottom.
