While I feel it's true, in this case it's both them being cheapskate as well as them picking bad middleman, look at this:

Wow. Germany football team knocked out after Japan unexpected win over Spain, which included a controversial goal. A draw would have put Germany through.
They won against costa Rica but wasn't enough. After the team virtue signalling and political stance at the beginning it came back to bite them in the ass.

Even as a Germany fan, I have to say that the Germans deserved this. They were done by Japan, the team that defeated both them and later Spain.

In the first Group E clash of Germany vs Japan. Germany went 1-0 up 1st. Then Antonio Rudiger of Germany mocked Takuma Asano of Japan with his cartoon run:


ESPN even thought that that was funny.

Japan later won that game 2-1. With Takuma Asano himself scoring the winning goal. Instant karma. Worse for Germany, that same Japan defeated Spain 2-1 yesterday and knocked Germany out of the World Cup. Who is laughing now?

Moral of the story. Don't make fun of the little guy. It can come back to bite you in the ass. In Germany's case, it was a disastrous bite in the ass. Now, the Germans have lost any chance of bringing home World Cup glory to relieve their Winter 2022 misery.
