While in MIT he's a favourt student of Dr Trump and expressed interest in the proton electrostatic accelerator they had at MIT. Dr Trump went out of his way to cover for him and wrote to MIT administration that the accelerator has broken down and in need of replacement and that he will sell the old one for scarp money. He ended up selling the machine to Chao for something like 10% of the value and Chao managed to successfully disassemble the machine and transport it back to China in pieces. Chao and that accelerator were both very important in the nuclear weapons program.
