Sky news generally blows things out of proportion, but over 50 years there could be fairly big changes.

Western Australia has a more Dutch background (historically a Dutch colony) and has subtle differences to east coast states (different public holidays, does not recognize queen's birthday holiday).

Economic differences (mining states vs non-mining states) also cause differences in priorities and public opinion (see WA premier comments re: economic cooperation with China, opposing east coast states)

But the key factor is whether or not the US still has the influence to guide Australian policy. Without them, just about anything is possible.

I do not know my NZ history very well. I think with the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 NZ came under British rule. They were told for Maori not to do so, would have meant they could have become a French or American colony. The Chiefs of about 4/5 tribes and their relative subtribes did not sign the treaty. They preferred to remain in control with the creation of some political entity. While not signing the treaty they did benefit and lose from the treaty's pluses and negatives.
There were many injustices carried out against the Maori as evidenced by the Maori land war after the Treaty however, in the last few decades, they have been well compensated.

However, in recent times the idea of Maori sovereignty has been championed by the descendants of the tribes that did and did not sign the treaty. I think the current Labour are more willing to try and accommodate Maori wants in some form. I think the white European descendants are afraid to see something like the current South Africa emerge.
