Besides being talented, smart and relatively good-looking, she is also clearly being promoted for political reasons. Sports diplomacy was always big between US and China. After China reunites with Taiwan by 2027, how is China suppose to break the ice and promote cooperation with USA again? Did you also miss the other promotions of China and US curling team, Su bingtian's American coach and China/US ping-pong?I am not faulting Gu at all, I am faulting the way she got represented over other native athletes. For example, i remember seeing common posters where she is front focus over native athletes.
China currently doesn't support dual citizenships, but Eileen Gu coverage is for officials to test the waters. Although PR/Nationality/Citizenship are slightly different, coverage of Eileen Gu and her eligibility for the Chinese team generated public discussion about dual PR/Nationality/Citizenship, which was the desired official goal. Imo China will relax some restrictions, maybe not change laws but stop strict enforcement of certain rules, see my previous post.wait, I thought dual citizenship is not allowed in china
is this a case of rules for thee but not for me?
She is propagandized by Chinese officials for a political reason, maybe you missed the value. There were a lot of heartfelt stories about diaspora returning to China (i.e., Chinese hockey team) to compete for the Olympics, Eileen was merely the poster child of that campaign. For economic/demographic reasons, China will have to allow and encourage (preferably skilled) Chinese diaspora back to the homeland.
To overseas Chinese and descendants/diaspora, it is a signal that China welcomes Chinese people back.
To domestic Chinese, this campaign is meant to change the domestic opinion in favour of more immigration of returning Chinese Diaspora.
It is my hope that China's official policy would also change to be more tolerant of dual citizenship to accompany the inevitable Chinese diaspora return policies.
