To put it simply, Biden wants a "China House" set up to address (read: counter, suppress and vilify) China on all fronts.

This means the United States desires a Cold War 2.0 with China.

Left with no other alternatives, China can do nothing, but to face the United States head on.

Though, I'm confident China would say: "Bring it on".

Remember, China is none of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, South Korea, and even the Soviet Union.

China IS China.

And in order for the Global South to survive, grow up and stand tall with dignity, China MUST WIN.
The easiest way to think about China is, remember how in the 1980s the US feared Showa Japan economically and Soviet Russia militarily?

China today is relatively stronger than 1980s Japan and Russia combined.

I doubt a boat would have made it there before he drowned.

Standing around and telling the guy they aren't going to jump in is strange. I assume it was because they were panicking and didn't know what to do. The best thing would have been to find something like a rope or pole he could have held onto. American cops aren't the smartest group of people.

Oh well, at least they didn't shoot him.
Did the wife tried to save him apart from yelling at the cops? At least one officer supposedly tried to get a boat. In every profession one's own safety comes first, there can be valid reasons why they couldn't help immediately but camera did not show what happened afterwards.

I think Eileen Gu still has her American passport. China made an exemption for her to join the national team because she's a special case (i.e. best player in the sport). She's not the only one getting a free pass though if you look at the hockey team lol..

IMO it's not a big deal. Everyone should follow the rules on paper but sometimes there are special circumstances where the authorities need to bend the rules a bit in order to achieve something more.

I do agreed with @daifo that Chinese media promoted Gu excessively to the detriment of local athletes. Should have given balanced coverage of ALL the athletes on the national team. In hindsight, the media putting her on the pedestal (like a female Jesus coming to save China) is unnecessary..

Olympics itself is a business too
She is popular, so she gets the coverage
Becomes a self-perpetuating cycle
If she blew it, then the media would try to promote someone else

Su Yiming should of been the bigger star since he was a real native putting China on the map for extreme winter sports and he also brought in 2 medals. I can only speculate is maybe his coach being Japanese was a bit frowned on but it was still nurturing Chinese talent on Chinese soil.

I would put it as Japan economically and technologically and Soviet Union politically and militarily. I actually think that relatively speaking China today is neither as dominant as Japan was technologically in the 80s nor the Soviet Union was militarily. However, it has a population of 1.4 billion and is not done developing yet.
