Chinese people living in the west are often the strongest defender of China. They are proud of their Chinese heritage and what China has accomplished in the last 30 years.
The onus is not on China, but nor is it on me to disproof Dong’s defection. I raised the possibility of defection. It’s a rumor that’s making the headlines. But is it completely implausible that Dong defected.
Disagree. As Chinese diaspora myself who left as a child, the vast majority of my "support" for my China is actually just complete and utter disdain for the English speaking western world. For those of us with no strong memories of China or 2nd/3rd generation diaspora, there really isn't much pride or connection per say in/with China. If people wanted that to be true, the United Front would have to be something other than a waste of space and money.
Consider the Israeli diaspora outreach program, where the Israeli government hosts 2 week vacations for all Jews (of the correct ethnicity) to showcase Israel's high points, among a lot of other things. What has China done for people like me in the diaspora? Jack and shit to be honest. I'm in the category of high skill technology talents the PRC wants but ngl when I look at their diaspora outreach programs, I feel uh cheated when I think back to some of my Jewish friends speaking about Israeli outreach to their diaspora.
Luckily for China the western world seems hellbent on persecuting the yellow peril in insulting and petty ways so I'm planning my exit to the mother land anyways but it's not out of enthusiasm and more out of contempt for the west.
