China's ambassador to Australia has revealed a joint taskforce will be set up to investigate a shocking, random attack on a Brisbane baby in 2024.

Nine-month-old Luka was with his family at Hanlon Park in Stones Corner when it was alleged a 33-year-old man approached them and threw a thermos of hot coffee over the infant.

Luka was left with devastating burns to his chest, neck and face and has undergone at least eight surgeries since the attack.

Police believe the alleged offender flew out of Australia on August 31, 2024, days after the incident and as little as 12 hours before authorities identified him.

In the months after the attack, Australian authorities confirmed the alleged offender was in China, with which Australia has no extradition arrangement.

Speaking in Canberra today, Chinese Ambassador Xiao Qian said a "working group" would travel from China to Brisbane to investigate the incident.

"To talk with Australian colleagues, to see exactly what happened, how it happened, and see how both sides can work together," he said.

"We're now preparing for the working group to come, so we are serious in addressing this concern, and we're serious in taking the necessary actions."

Fantastic. In the event that Chinese investigators are satisfied with the evidence presented, I assume they would be looking to extradite the accused back to Australia on a one-off basis. Or would they instead be looking to deal with him within the Chinese judicial system?
