Evidently, some people are so used to psychologically being on the back foot and lacking in faith when it comes to Chinese foreign policy that any alleged developments in Chinese diplomatic positions is seen as a "trap" and "adversarial propaganda," where someone like Wang Yi could be outwitted and trapped by even the likes of a Balt that comes from a family of exceptionally naked opportunists (a WW2 Nazi collaborator in one generation and then a CPSU member in the next). This is not to say that foreign parties don't try to entrap Chinese leadership. For instance, Xi’s displeasure with the leak of his conversation with Trudeau is well known. Additionally, his potential absence from the BRICS meeting in Brazil has been interpreted by some as partly due to Lula's wife, in a leaked conversation, insinuating that Xi has the power to rein in TikTok (an issue made all the more sensitive by ongoing US efforts to fabricate a link between the Chinese government and the app).

There's nothing really profound about what Wang Yi allegedly said nor did it say anything neither side wasn't already thinking.

In fact, though the exact narrative framing is tampered by Western propagandistic editorializing, it nonetheless benefits China for such a thing to be leaked out. The EU-China relationship is a charade and always has been. China, it seems, has finally realized that its best strategy in Europe is to divide and conquer. Rather than dealing with the EU as a bloc, China now prefers to build bilateral relationships with individual European countries, thereby weakening the EU’s ability to negotiate collectively. China was nearly constrained by that draft multilateral trade agreement years ago, in which it made significant concessions, only for the EU to scuttle it. Given the imminent concessions it's about to likely make for the entry of Chinese EVs, EU likely regrets abdicating that far more advantageous position of theirs now in hindsight.

Since 2022, Europe’s behavior has been nothing short of blatant subservience to its American "father." Loyal Atlanticists lackeys, like Baerbock, who recently received the golden parachute position of UN General Assembly president, are consistently handsomely rewarded after their terms in office. This leaves little that China could offer to the EU-level political class to win them over, especially given that the state of European dignity has devolved to the level of the NATO's secretary-general’s recent comment about America being their "daddy."

It's also frankly good for Russia to hear. Given the secrecy surrounding any potential Chinese assistance to Russia only privy to the top levels since 2022, many have grown noticeably skeptical about the sincerity and tangible benefits of the Sino-Russian "partnership without limits" agreed upon in December 2021. The only credible justification for China’s position is that it will not allow a Russian defeat for the sole reasoning that such an outcome would pose a direct threat to China itself. While this may seem eminently self-serving, it’s also a position that can be believed by even the most cynical misanthrope. Anything more "high-minded" than that would risk sounding obnoxiously disingenuous, even if it were true.

Paradoxically, admitting self-interest is also likely the best way to reassure Russia about China’s intentions. In relationships like this, where the trust is still being built, acknowledging that both sides are in it for themselves is often the most honest and solidifying approach. This "attributed statement" has now made that clear to the Russians. Whether China’s motivations had stemmed from playing the role of socialist internationalist, or being grateful Russia taught China how to sing Katyusha, or simply pursuing its own designs was fundamentally ultimately secondary for the Russians. What matters in the immediate moment, given the sheer opaqueness of the relationship and the temporal urgency of the ongoing conflict for the Russian side, was for a confirmation that China has Russia’s back, which is exactly what the Russians have long wanted to verify and now they have it.

Of course on a realpolitik level, China's more nuanced position is for the conflict to continue into the long term so that any rapprochement between Russia and the West is rendered politically impossible, meaning it would prefer to see neither a Russian defeat nor a Russian victory in the short term. If this attributed statement endangered China's "reputation" as a "peacemaker," that was always largely a worthless reputation to have in the first place, since it put China's public position at odds with its actual strategic interests of seeing a continuation to the West-Russia rift that the conflict on the ground enables to persist. Furthermore, continuing that diplomatic gimmick in the long term risked actually trapping China into the role of mediator. This was something Ukraine has repeatedly attempted to ensnare China into several times now for good reason: the potential "stabbed in the back" reaction from Russia at being "policed" by China to implement an armistice on any terms short of its victory could result in a resentment more intense than what Germany’s soldiers felt toward their leaders in Berlin after World War I.

As for the claim that "the conflict would have ended long ago if China had provided aid," this is a position that's been already officially expressed by China’s permanent representative to the UN months ago. Ironically, this actually verifiable Chinese assertion is the major part which I've seen Russian nationalist reactions get the most miffed at, since it insinuates against the notion of their single-handed fighting capabilities.

Given that the EU's behavior since 2022 has extinguished any fantasies that it could ever serve as an independent third pole that China could rely on to balance against the US, there's no point for either side to pretend that, at the multi-lateral level, there is any notion that the EU would ever side with China against America (especially since his EU counterpart here has openly stated that "defeating" Russia is a "warm-up" for their anticipated conflict with China). As such, the only substantive thing to do at this point for China is to issue a reminder to the EU that besides the carrot lies the stick.

Yep, it's been 4 months and I'm waiting for that Sharon Stone's leg crossing scene to happen...
I do want to see her in the "Ilsa -shewolf of the SS" uniform-my apologies to actress Dyanne Thorne-but Kallas is the real thing!!
All joking aside-China has been dealing with the rabid Japanese mikado and their descendants like Shinzo Abe and the like( you guys informed me that X apparently has some Japanese saying Japan should attack China and provoke a war because China has become too powerful/proud??-Go right fucking ahead little wako-do it!!) I think the recent "gekokujo" type intrusion by the JMSDF DDG Suzutsuki shows this mindset is still very much alive and only China's ever increasing power./strength is keeping it very down-otherwise??Europe is no different-Azov Battalion etc.

Trump and the rest of the worthless bunch in government (should seriously focus more on there own country instead of mucking around over seas. That is the simplest conclusion one can draw from this event. Also defunding FEMA, the department that was supposed to handle these situations, is not a wise move in hindsight. I am not joking in this situation, this is disgracefully bad
