The thing about this post is that the same thing happen to China semiconductor industry. That ingrained idea in the Chinese industry of that "renting is better than building", "foreign is better than domestic" is what stifled China semiconductor and IT industry for almost two decades and leaving it vulnerable to crippling export controls and sanctions.

I hope that the Iranians learned their lesson, like Chinese companies like Huawei learned theirs, the hard way.

Considering the competition, distrust in Chinese systems makes more sense for Iran than Pakistan. Pakistan’s main opponent is India, which besides the Rafael, only has outdated fighters. Even the Rafael is only a 4.5 generation fighter and India has a very limited number of them.

But Israel has full access to the F-35, which is a 5th generation fighter widely considered the best in the world. China’s answer to it, the J-20, was never for sale. It actually makes sense the Iranians would not have wanted to acquire the J-10 given what they were up against. The J-10 doesn’t match up well vs the F-35.

That said, neither does Su-35; but we also don’t know what happened behind the scenes there, except that Iran did not end up with any delivered. It’s possible the Russians gave them a better deal due to the war but with the caveat of late delivery. Either way, none of these fighters can match up to Israel’s state of the art air force and neither China nor Russia are selling Iran their 5th generations.

The F-35 is not invulnerable and has its weakness, the Rafael was suppose to be closer to the F-35 than the J-10 and still Pakistan excellent use of the air defenses allow them to get the upper hand. The issue is that having something and using it well is much better than having nothing. If wasn't for the Iranian missile force Iran wouldn't have any deterrence against Israel. which by the way Iranian missiles are made using Chinese tech, for example the fiber optic IMU or the Carbon Fiber.

The middle east has to be the most annoying region in the world to manage. I dunno what makes millions want to die in a desert over there all the time but that place since the start of civilization almost always had people killing each other non stop.

American bullet being much more expensive than Chinese made is a sure thing, whether that is 10 times or 100 times is another thing. Bullet is not different from any other industrial product such as a pair of shoes. They are all based on a long supply chain of input products. The final price of a bullet is the function of inputs such as chemical, copper, steel and electricity generation etc. If it is 10 times more expansive for US to make shoese, it will be around the same scale for a bullet. One has to scale up the whole industry to match a product. And not to be forgotten is manpower to fill those factories and mines etc. Then we should look at the proportion of US population in actual industry. To bring up that proportion we need schools and teachers in the relevant field, that is another huge investment. Less of them the price of qualified worker would be many times higher than Chinese counterpart, not because American worker is better, simply because they are hard to find.
