Watching the news... I don't know why China didn't pull the rare earths card earlier like with Biden. Look at how the Western world and their allies (many hostile to China) are talking how their industries are going to grind to a halt because of how dependent they are on China to supply them. China ain't gouging them. China isn't the one who first tried to weaponized economics and trade to force other to align with their interests. As a warning, they said China would deny supply chains first but that was about having an excuse to do it to China before it was done to them. It was no different then to what Trump is doing now.
If the Democrats win the White House in the next Presidential cycle, you think they will think twice over US anti-China policies that don't work just because it was Trump? Biden followed what Trump did. When it comes to foreign policy they're not that different mentally. When it comes to US allies, they followed Biden to their own detriment. So the only difference between Biden and Trump was they were amiable to Biden... mental breakdown and all.
So what if the West finds alternatives to China. It won't be cheaper anytime in the foreseeable future. It will always be more expensive and China will be able to destroy the competition just by flooding the market with their reserves. The only way they can avoid China is by violating a whole bunch of human rights and most of their soft power hiding behind superior high morals, ethics, and the rule of law gets thrown out the window and that's the only thing they have to get the world not to get revenge on them for their crimes of the past.
A good amount of these stories are coming from Indian sources and how their industries are threatened by not having access to Chinese rare earths. Their problem goes on a lot further than China's general export stop on rare earths to the world. Did they expect to hide behind the world complaining about non-access so they can still get rare earths? How about whining like they did complaining that China was undermining India's Apple iPhone production by not shipping Chinese manufacturing equipment so they can make iPhones for Apple? And I found this tidbit that Chinese are suppose to go to India and train their workers on making iPhones. China is not obligated to do any of that. China is their enemy by their own decree but somehow China is suppose to help them for some reason...
I don't know if this gem is true but there was talk that Western companies in order to avoid China's general export restrictions is they'll have to move their companies to China to manufacture. The very thing Trump wanted the world to be forced to do bringing their manufacturing to the US. Wouldn't that be a turn?
