The US is trying to appeal to allies' sense of shared values to keep them in-line. What does it say when allies are not listening? And you know Trump talking up how negotiations with Japan are going great because he thinks China will fear the US and Japan are getting closer and thus will run to Trump for a deal.

It makes sense if you see the difference in prices. For example, the Gucci T-shirt sells for $100. But if you get rid of the middleman/dealer and buy it from the manufacturer directly, with a 245% tariff, the price will be a whopping $3.65! In a related thread, the poster claims that millions of small businesses will go bankrupt in the US if the trade war doesn't stop. The implication is that millions of America's small businesses are essentially acting as middleman/dealers.
