Seriously, he should get it into his head, the USA cannot innovate nor have the resources and man power to do so to defeat China in this life time or any life time for that matter.
I don't think it is an own goal. Trump and Xi would have planned out ways for the reunification of China by 2027. The US probably wants some assurance China won't completely cut them off from pharmaceuticals and high-end chips so they want some factories in US. They won't be cost competitive anyways, but it will help US public accept the "loss of Taiwan" easier.
