BEIJING, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) – On the evening of Nov. 11, an incident involving a vehicle ramming into pedestrians occurred at the Sports Center in Xiangzhou District, Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, resulting in 35 fatalities and 43 serious injuries so far.
Following the incident, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, President of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission Xi Jinping expressed deep concern and issued significant instructions. He emphasized that the incident at Zhuhai City's Xiangzhou District Sports Center, which led to severe casualties, is extremely egregious. Every effort must be made to treat the injured and handle the aftermath for the victims and their families with care. The perpetrator must be severely punished according to law. All regions and relevant departments should draw profound lessons from this incident, implement preventive measures at the source of risk, resolve disputes promptly, and strictly prevent extreme cases from occurring to ensure the safety of the people and social stability.
Li Qiang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Premier of the State Council, issued directives to rescue the injured with all efforts, manage the aftermath properly, investigate the case thoroughly, and punish the perpetrator according to law. He also emphasized combining prevention and control efforts to identify and resolve potential risks and social conflicts, ensuring overall social stability.
Following Xi Jinping’s instructions, the central authorities have dispatched a working group to the area to guide the response. Guangdong Province and Zhuhai City are fully engaged in treating the injured, investigating the case, and maintaining social control. All tasks are currently underway.
