The version of the Hong Kong handover I read was it was on the heels of the Falklands War when negotiations over the handover were to begin and the British were all hawkish taunting about keeping Hong Kong and breaking the treaty. Deng Xiaoping said to the British when it's 1997, the Chinese will be entering the city no matter what. The British testicles were cut-off and they went into talks. Before that Hong Kong was only known for cheap crappy products. The British wanted to turn Hong Kong into a poison pill for China hence when they first talked about democracy when they never entertained it before and also opening Hong Kong up financially. So don't believe the bull that the British are so proper that they believe in the rule of law and they cared about democracy for Hong Kong when they were in control.

Remember when China proposed a space weapons ban and the US rejected it but then accused China of being hypocrite for developing space weapons afterwards...? Somehow they think China still has to abide by it when the US rejected it and no treaty was signed.

The man named to lead Argentina’s central bank by libertarian president-elect Javier Milei has turned down the job over policy differences, amid signs that the South American nation’s maverick next leader is backing away from his flagship policy of dollarising the sickly economy.

Emilio Ocampo, an economic history professor and former investment banker, was the leading advocate within Milei’s team of dumping the Argentine peso in favour of the US dollar. The author of a recent paper advocating dollarisation, he had been working on a blueprint to implement the plan after the new government takes office on December 10.

But a source close to Ocampo confirmed on Thursday night local news reports that he would no longer accept the post.

“The only reason for Ocampo to be at the [central bank] was to dollarise,” the source said. “He was never going to the central bank to implement someone else’s plan, which he doesn’t agree with.” Ocampo and Milei’s team declined to comment.

But Milei said in an interview on Wednesday night that while he liked Ocampo’s plan, “we need to see whether the market situation allows a solution like the one Emilio proposes, and whether he is prepared to implement a plan which is not the one he had originally planned”.
