Victor Gao is not a debater, he is a technocrat. He was invited to be interviewed, but was perhaps naive about Al-Jazeera's intensions. Unlike the politicians in the West, he doesn't ramble aimlessly when dealing with a tough question. That HK roach asked him, if Xi Jinping had made any mistakes in his term. He answered by saying that the Chinese government (that includes Xi Jinping) didn't address the aging population issue fast enough. To me, that is an even better answer than blaming Xi Jinping. Because it is actually the CPC taking responsibility as a whole. People keep forgetting that the Xi Jinping is not the CPC, but a part of it. He makes decisions with the CPC, not for the CPC. If anyone were to ask Trump any tough questions, he immediately attacks that person for asking a nasty question. That is even worse than what Victor Gao had done.BTW, Victor Gao is a poor debator and a subpar representative for China's public relations.
Victor Gao doesn't have the of sharp debating tongue of Western-style debaters, but he will suit the more traditional aspect of China's PR. When facing with honest and smarter audiences, he will be listened to. Nevertheless, for those anti-China idiots, Victor Gao is too nice, and straightforward to debate with them. People like Carl Zha, Xiangyu, Liu Xin, or Einar Tangen would give them a spicier debate. But they wont invite these people, because they don't want a debate, they just want an easy target from China to bash.
