I think it’s mostly social reasons that it’s catching flak in the media First off it also predominantly known as the Hollywood drug. Cuz rich ass celebrities are now using this fairly easy way to lose weight and maintain their attractiveness. rather than the usual diet and exercise. This causes a huge artificial demand for people who actually are not diabetic and do not really need it. Which lead to the obvious result in many cases of doctors having a long wait list of patients waiting to get this drug but supply isn’t enough to meet demand and black market with crazy prices begin to form. And also cuz it’s highly priced, many poor people who are diabetic are not able to afford it.
On the medical side, because it is a drug that suppresses appetite through artificial means, there is going to be side effects. It appears they not only make you lose fat tissue but also muscle mass.
Prof Lustig talks abit about this and the mechanism of the GLP1 receptor antagonist.
Another factor to consider is, for people who took it and lost weight. Will they continue to take it for the rest of their life? Will they gain the weight back if they discontinued it? Are there long term effects which we do not know yet?
