This is why I don't believe China is behind a massive anti-West propaganda campaign around the world like the West accuses. If it were the reverse, the West would ignore this and just keep saying China failed to end the Houthi threat as promised they were going to do. That's what China should be doing to the US right now if China were on this anti-West campaign to make the US and British look like failures. But of course there are some naive Chinese that think they can still win over the West hence why they haven't done it. There are so many truths out there that China can exploit against the West but they don't do that because some want to think China will be seen taking the high road and somehow the West will recognize it. It's another one of those things where the Chinese don't recognize how they look to others like being a sycophant or teacher's pet as a good thing like Asians see it. Saying you're taking the high road is saying everyone else is taking the low road. You think you can win over the West by telling them they're taking the low road...?

I wish China were waging an anti-West propaganda campaign because they wouldn't need to lie. Just look at how the Chinese brought up George Floyd to Blinken in Alaska. He went into panic trying to counter where he invited the UN to investigate the US. Just look at now where Blinken again was in panic just because China sent a larger delegation to Davos than the US. Apparently having more people there meant China could take more meetings with others than the US at Davos. See how fragile they are?

I like to see USN try to stop any of those "20 Chinese Crew" ships.

It would be hilarious but depressingly plausible that the USN actually does blockade the Red Sea and prevent Chinese flagged and Chinese crewed ships from transiting ‘for their own protection’ just because they cannot protect their own and allied shipping from Houthi attacks.

Would never happen, US is backtracking even from taking a fight with just the Houthis, trying to stop an actual ship from China doing normal transit would lead to military standoff with PLAN and likely green light to Iran and houthis to mass attack US navy ships using "improved" missiles.

At most, they might try to force their domestic carriers not to reflag to China.

Somehow I find it both funny and disgusting that Zelensky has sunk to this new low, not that I am surprised but given that he is willing to say this at Davos and that he wasn't ejected from the room means that this is sanctioned by the USA
Zelensky said in a NATO security conference, and this is recorded, that Ukraine should get nuclear weapons. Then he got his country invaded.
He is an idiot. The only reason he is still alive is that he serves a better purpose remaining in power since he is totally incompetent. It makes the Russians' jobs much easier.
And the Russians, just like the Soviets before them, have a long history with targeted assassinations. Perhaps he should go read what happened with Stephan Bandera or all those independentist Chechen leaders. If he thinks he will be safe in Israel, like his parents are, on in the US or whatever he is wrong.

By the time of the digital revolution, with the advent of computers and internet, the USSR no longer had any realistic hope of catching up the US and the West in technology and economy.
In the 1980s the Soviets were making some pretty huge investments trying to plug the gap in semiconductors. They wanted to jump straight into x-ray lithography and surpass the West basically.

This is the master plan for the new facilities that were supposed to be built in Zelenograd. You would have a Synchrotron in the middle and the industrial facilities would feed off beamlines radiating from the center.

Construction was eventually frozen because of the economic crisis in the Soviet Union. But some of the buildings are still there.

The Russians today make their own optical fiber. They are basically independent in terms of its production and deployment. So I am not sure they would be that hopelessly behind.

how does the sino soviet split affected USSR internal politics?
It affected them quite a lot. The Soviets had to keep military expenditure up to man the Sino-Soviet border for example. In the late 1970s the consideration that China could easily capture the Trans-Siberian Railway (it's right next to the border) and cut access to the Far East meant they spent a boatload of human and economic resources making the Baikal-Amur Mainline. Or as the Soviets called it back then the project of the century.

He actually told the Australians something like "No it wasn't the PLAN, if it was the divers would all be dead by now".
As I've pointed out elsewhere, Sovremenny's sonar can pump out 221dB:

I don’t know why the Australians are complaining, their entire culture is geared around fear of an Asian superpower and being “swamped by Asians”. You’d think the Rhodesia of the pacific would jump at the chance for real life combat situation with China, instead we have taxpayer funded therapy for Australians faced with death and battle against the PLA.

Also, a shot across the bow for the globalist moneybags who think they can hedge their bets by betting against China. You either play by Chinese rules or face Chinese law.

Australians are the most wannabe-Americans. If there was a competition for who is the biggest American worshippers, the Australians will be in the grand final.
