This is indicative of how serious the problem is in Vietnam. Foreign firms including Chinese ones actually bring in backup generators and build their own roads in Vietnam, typically connecting their factories to the main roads (local government can't be bothered), obviously not large scale infrastructure. If businesses are complaining now it means the problems from 10 years ago still persist or have worsened.

I used to go to Ho Chi Minh City often back in 2013/2014, my local associate and guide (Vietnamese American from Connecticut) informed me that local Vietnamese can't do infrastructure, everything from tunnels, bridges and airports were built by the Koreans and Japanese. I was mistaken as a Korean on several occassions. Northern Vietnamese provinces depend on imported Chinese electricity from Yunnan and Guangxi, and very likely still do to this day. They act tough in the SCS, but they should know if the shiit hits the fan, the switches in those Yunnan and Guangxi powerplants go off, and its romantic candle time in Hanoi.
Vietnamese SCS stuff is for political theater and the government knows it, which is why China mostly bullies Philippines. It's ez pz to bully the Philippines (actually, justifiably striking back against their aggression) and make their sponsor look weak.

I wouldn't be too sad if Vietnam is allowed to keep a few islands for their loyalty once the hegemon and its puppets are kicked out.

This does align with Peter Lee aka Chinahand‘s take when asked by Carl Zha, something along the lines of how silly it is for the US to take on both Russia and China at same time. Which is question I ask myself too, a pretty valid question. I mean how come US is this stupid? Are they suicidal?
His reply was basically that the US is just taking its opportunity when the cards are mostly lining up. They are able to manipulate all the anti China elements around china, Japan, yoon in SK, Marcos in Phillipines, India and now possibly the pro US Thailand after recent elections, it’s not often these favourable conditions all align together to be able to make use of. The proxy war in Russia isn’t really costing any American troops or assets yet cuz it’s still a proxy war for now. They can afford to warmonger on China. Although how long this can continue I’m not sure.

Also, Not to mention in Aus where all the mainstream media, not just Murdoch rags, are constantly warmongering on China, there is definitely a feeling of preparing us to accept that war with China is close to inevitable and if that happens, China is the bad guy.

just the reporting on Ukraine conflict by smh alone, supposedly a more independent newspaper in Australia is enough to make me puke. No difference if it was reporting done by the US state department itself. I have no doubt if war in Taiwan happened this will be same kind of BS propaganda served by Aussie media.
But is it really true that cards are lining up? Ukraine was costing a lot of money from US and so does Europe. Even if people are cooperative their economic capability to expand the military is harmed. With the trend of dedollarization they will struggle to print the money needed to defeat China in a sustained fight.

Currently US military is not high readiness enough for a peer conflict, and there is no spare money to change that.

HANOI, June 5 (Reuters) - Vietnam's rolling power cuts have hit industrial parks in the country's northern provinces where top global manufacturers such as Foxconn and Samsung have factories, officials said on Monday, as a surge in consumption amid a heatwave stretched the power supply system.

The frequent and often unannounced power cuts prompted EuroCham, which represents European companies in the country, to send a letter on Monday to the industry and trade ministry urging quick measures to address the emergency.

Some industrial parks in the northern provinces of Bac Ninh and Bac Giang have been facing blackouts, said two local investment officials, declining to be named as they were not authorised to speak to media.

"We are working with EVN later today to discuss the situation and possible measures to limit the impacts," one of the officials said, referring to the country's state utility Electricity of Vietnam.

, among others.

"Vietnam's industry ministry should take urgent measures before the country's reputation as a reliable global manufacturing hub is undermined," Jean-Jacques Bouflet, deputy chairman of EuroCham Vietnam told Reuters on Monday, adding that the power cuts seriously disrupted industrial activities.

State media reports cited EVN's northern unit as saying power to Canon's factory in Bac Ninh will be cut from 8:00 am local time on Monday until 5:00am on Tuesday, adding power to at least five industrial parks and several villages in the province will be partially or fully cut for several hours during the first days of this week.

It was not immediately clear if the other companies were affected. The companies and EVN did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The blackouts threaten efforts to avert an economic slowdown due to weak demand in key export markets, after first-quarter growth slipped to 3.3% from 5.9% in the fourth quarter.

and manufacturers switching operations to off-peak hours to keep the national power system running, with more than 11,000 companies having agreed to cut consumption where possible.
Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Thang Hai admitted at a government meeting over the weekend that there had been "power shortages for households and businesses at certain locations at certain time", adding that the difficulties would continue.

In my opinion, Vietnam has a much brighter future than India. Their workforce is clearly much more intelligent than the Indian workforce.

Vietnam tends to punch far above its weight in the International Science Olympiads compared to India, which tends to underperform.

I don't really understand why people focus on India so much when ASEAN exists. India, with 1.4 billion people, exported $420 billion of goods in 2022 whereas ASEAN, with less than half the population, exported $1.7 trillion of goods in 2021 (

). This figure includes intra-ASEAN trade, but that is only 21.3% of ASEAN's total trade. ASEAN is clearly beating India on all fronts.

France objects to Nato plan for office in Tokyo

Emmanuel Macron has raised concerns about the transatlantic security alliance losing focus
French president Emmanuel Macron has objected to a Nato proposal to open an office in Tokyo because he believes the transatlantic security alliance should remain focused on its own north Atlantic region.
One French official said Paris believed Nato’s charter required the alliance to limit its geographic reach to the “north Atlantic”. But the official also suggested it could undermine European credibility with China in regard to the war in Ukraine, particularly in terms of asking Beijing not to supply arms to Russia.
One of the people familiar with the debate inside Nato said France was reluctant to back anything “that contributes to Nato-China tension”.
