What did the anglo American elite think? that if they gave China 1-2 year reprieve and started bashing on Russia instead, that things would go back to normal?

The stupidity of this type of thinking is beyond comprehension. Trump's administration is all run by kids.
The American system is designed as a kabuki theatre on purpose, so that one party can be the 'bad cop' to the other party's 'good cop' and throughout it all, american 1%er elites are supposed to benefit no matter who is in charge.
So a Democrat admin. can make itself seem like a good cop to the trumpets republican party bad cop, to get the Chinese to agree to certain concessions "or else we'll get voted out and you'll have to deal with Pompeo". Rinse and repeat with the Russians and Republicans vice versa.
By standing fast with Russia, China sends the message that what trump has done is irreversible; that Chinese tech autarky is here to stay, that Chinese-Russian entente against the Anglos will endure, that Australia is going to be destroyed economically unless it breaks ranks with the anglo FVEYEs (unlikely, but China is perfectly fine with a weakened and economically insignificant Australia).
Ditto with the Sino-Euro FTA, China with its dual circulating economy means that europe needs China more than vice versa.
