I have always maintained that countries (esp White nations) only respect those who display hard power. Despite having a mutually beneficial economic relationship the EU continues to talk crap about China, its largest trading partner.
Why does the world fear US? Well because they can cripple your country if they want and they do it via economic sanctions AND military. Nobody messes around with them because they're aware of their capabilities.
Hard power is the only way China will receive the respect it deserves. European colonists still occupy many Islands in Indian and Pacific Ocean, maybe China should bring them democracy and freedom the Western way??

It's a bit complicated than that.
If "everybody" feared US, then i am pretty sure Taliban would have ran away & Iran would have given up long ago.
The biggest thing US can do is cripple Economy,military was never it's biggest strength unlike popular believe. If it wasn't for it's nuclear arsenal, It would have invaded & teared into pieces long ago.
Economy is fulcrum of a society. If you can cripple a country's economy, you can get it's own people to revolt against country as you have seen before.
And we handed control of global economy on a silver platter to them after WW2.
Well, some people are still saying China should go slow with building aircraft carriers. Build one or two, then test and perfect them for years before building the next version. But it depends on how soon you need the hard power, whether for negotiating a better trade deal, maintaining territorial integrity or a show of force. You don't need the perfect ship, you can still boost your hard power.
The thing is..... I believe China needs to build up its soft power alot more before it tries to leverages its hard power, you'll see the western powers use its hard power in the egregious way possible and face minimal criticism(usually just some grumbling that's forgotten within weeks), let alone actual consequences. First, what they are gonna do? Sanction and invade themselves? China is the only country with enough hard power to do that outside of the west and they are scared shitless at the mere idea of it.
Second, they control the global English media and the most spoken language globally is English and everything reported will naturally be framed in favour themselves and unfavourably against their rivals, plus, their entertainment industry does goes a long way to cushion foreign public opinion against you in neutral countries.
We will see on that one, it’s only a few weeks to the end of this year, anything can happen
Give it time though, when the western world collapses due to the virus, China's time will come sooner or later and given that this virus isn't going away, the media will eventually have to concentrate on the virus only since the more they look at China, the more the enable the spread and the more the health system will break down and the more people will die and eventually, this amount of deaths will be too difficult to ignore since as of now, this virus is evolving and soon, what ever hastily made western vaccines are not going to work at all. This is turning from a slow burn to a full on blaze
