Hidden inside this article prioritizing lunatic opinions like Bolton's, the only actual US balloon expert they consulted says that wind conditions in the Northern hemisphere winter is the least feasible time to steer a balloon, and it is almost impossible for the balloon's minimal steering to target any specific location to move to. Let's do a fun thought experiment here. Suppose, for a second, that the roles were reversed. A U.S. weather balloon strayed into Chinese air space around Lunar New Year and traveled all the way down the eastern sea coast from Heilongjiang to Hainan. On the day of the Lantern Festival a Chinese airliner suddenly spotted the intruding balloon and all the media in China from Global Times to Xinhua started blasting hysterics about American Imperialist aggression, with Hu Xijin leading the charge on both Weibo and Twitter. They scrambled dozens of J-20s to survey the stupid thing and failed to knock it down and right when it cleared the sea coast in Hainan, a J-20 finally dispatches the damn thing with a PL-10. And after that every stickied video on Douyin and Bilibili shows high def videos of the J-20 shooting down a balloon for 48 hours. Tell me, would you consider that competent handling of the situation by the SeeSeePee or would you actually laugh at them like you usually do?

Tell me if the USAF can jam the balloon and eavesdrop on the SIGINT equipment on the balloons then why the urgency to shoot it down? You said that every second that's it is in the US, it's getting valuable information, then basically means the US can't jam it?
If every second it's in the air, it gains valuable information on the US, the why didn't the US shoot it down in Alaska? When it was supposedly discovered on Jan 27 or 28, according to the Americans, why did it take Blinken another week to cancel his trip to China? Why wasn't he angry enough earlier to cancel the trip? Last I heard, Alaska was part of the US. Their reason for not shooting down the balloon with urgency was safety? But there's large swaths of land in Saskatchewan and Midwest with no people, why didn't they shoot it down with "urgency" then?
So many questions and the US regime's response and answers are laughable and inconsistent.
What most likely happened was the US 850 billion dollar military didn't detect the weather balloon and it was discovered by average citizens. Once they found out it was form china, they tried to act tough and save face. That's why they made a lot of retroactive comments which doesn't make sense and are j consistent. That's the most likely situation.
But sure go ahead and try to perform mental gymnastics to make sense of US comments and actions.

When the balloon was over Idaho, and the Americans sent three spy planes and two F-22 (which has spying ability), to check it out, then decided not to shoot it down - then that is all we needed to know about what spying capability that balloon had!
In Idaho, that balloon was still a curiosity, and slightly amusing.
After the intercepts, the propaganda show started.
By then, the American political machine got into it, then the people got into it, the military had to get into it again, the press having a field day like an OJ Simpson trial, this was a hoot!
Then President Trump got into against President Biden, which of course triggered people, which in turn triggered more people.

Seems like the Chinese foreign ministry were the only ones not laughing at all of this, lol.

you forgot 1 more thing: imagine a user named murica_souljahB0i_420 on this forum with a hammer/sickle flag for their avatar, calling the shootdown "a great victory over fascist invaders", demonstrating both "the great urgency in neutralizing imperialist recon assets with concern for the lives and property of the citizenry" and simultaneously saying "this recon asset was certainly being jammed and under surveillance so it gained zero useful info, there is no hurry to destroy it". Wonder what his reaction would've been to that.

Probably better to work with China to de-escalate the situation instead of turning into some sort of rallying cry against China. Lots of normally sane people are now saying that China is going to war based on this escalation and are claiming the end times but seriously, for an supposed super power, couldn’t they have shut up about it and simply go and confiscate the balloon quietly rather then go along with the neocon agenda for starting yet another war. If this is an adversarial platform, a mere balloon, then China has the right to blow up any US satellite going over Chinas air space if that is the logic to use, heck, blow up any and every U.S. ship from coming close to China because it’s American, it has to be evil. Also, why did they have to waste a missile from an f-22 to down a balloon, couldn’t a few bullets at a closer range from f-16 or lesser do the same job or is Americas tech really be as outdated as it truly seems to be.
