People here are always taking about a hot war between US and China, but historically, nuclear armed superpowers do not fight each other directly. Instead, they engage in proxy wars.

It may not be apparent at first, but Ukraine is a proxy war between US and China.

That is how a lot of Chinese commentators on the mainland view it, I have heard.

My position is very simple, and that is the PRC should back Russia all the way no matter what.

It does not matter what China says in public, full backing for Russia in this war is not negotiable, and it is a no-brainer I feel.

In another vein, what we are witnessing in the world is truly remarkable.

China and Russia, are setting up different systems and organizations, that they will participate in, and have buy in from other countries that want to be part of that. Having another payment system outside of the US dollar is a prime example. The BRICS and Shanghai Co-operation Sphere, and RCEP are more examples.

China and Russia are globalizing in a major way that will reshape the world.

What is the West doing? They're too busy fighting this war on behalf of Ukraine!

The US withdraws to fight a war, while China advances its ideas of globalization which is having a receptive audience.

This war in Europe, is a far bigger deal than what the American media or American government would let on.

The American idea of globalization today is really just to keep the allies onside.

Yes, said Orban. It sounds crazy today, "but if you look at the tendency of how we got to this point today, it can't be ruled out."

He's just sugar-coating it. Orban is not an idiot.

But the people he is giving the message to, they truly are idiots.

Besides what Clausewitz, said about warfare, there are cardinal rules, such as the fog of war.

Wars have a tendency to expand.

Look at the history of war. Participants grow. Theaters multiply.

The Global South knows this. That is why they remain neutral.

The military expert that GlobalTimes (Song Zhongping) likes to bring out frequently had an interesting quote today.

I suppose the rhetoric in China is shifting towards a conclusive path now.

Song Zhongping, a Chinese military expert and TV commentator, cited a Chinese saying that "quantitative changes lead to qualitative changes."
The US keeps hollowing out its political commitment by passing bills, selling weapons and making provocative visits to the island of Taiwan. Its provocations keep piling up in quantities, which will lead to a qualitative change - China has to address the Taiwan question once for all, Song told the Global Times on Friday

There is no common currency to have in BRICS. Do you even understand that a common currency with those countries would severely damage and cripple China's wealth and economy?

Look at BRICS:
  • Brazil: Failed economy
  • Russia: lol
  • India: enemy
  • China: The only strong one
  • South Africa: Irrelevant
If not for the hegemonic clash, it would make more sense for China to have a common currency with the US than with BRICS

Once again I request to unban Gatekeeper so that he can dispell these idiotic ideas that Lavrov is pushing as a smokescreen
Agreed about BRICS but disagree about USD. Common currency in general has a lot of downsides because you are essentially giving away your monetary independence which is huge. There should be an equally strong boon to even seriously consider such action.

Even in the case of creating some common artificial currency for mutual transactions, why not just push for RMB? It makes more sense for China to continue pushing for wider adoption of RMB - yes, it will eventually lead to high appreciation of the Yuan but on the other hand China gets access to "cheap" resources (since the printing press is now controlled by China and they don't have to "work" for it), boosts its internal consumption since people will be able to afford more, increases relative salaries which is important to have a strong high-tech economy, etc. Basically, since China is aiming for transition into high-income status, wider adoption of RMB now has more upsides than downsides which was not the case e.g. a decade ago.

It'll change according to Ukraine's fortunes. It's the recent loss of Soledar and increasingly, in Bakhmut, that prompted the West to send tanks. If Ukraine starts losing more, they'll send more. The West aims to ensure victory in Ukraine. But they want to do it with the minimal amount of expenses, so they're basing it on Ukraine's performance.

You are free to critique a Religion or Idea. If he had said anything about muslims as a group he would have been arrested.
The guy that wanted to burn a Torah is an Egyptian muslim immigrant and apparently he withdrew his application.
I think the consensus among people here is that they think it should be allowed but it is not something they encourage or want to happen. Sweden is a very secular country and instances where religion are affecting policy's or laws are viewed with a lot of disdain.
This used to be the case here with Christianity a few hundred years ago and no one want that back.
Today that happens mostly in the middle east but the American christian right wing were also very unpopular during the Bush administration for the same reason.
This is not true. There is no chance you can burn a copy of the Torah or Talmud in front of the Israeli embassy anywhere in Europe. The dude who proposed this has probably had a knock on his door. Offending Jews or pointing out their control of government/media is a no no anywhere in Europe.

Being secular has nothing to do with it. Europeans have no concept of freedom of speech or political expression, it is (was) an Anglo-American concept. Your political beliefs need to align with what the government deems acceptable. In Germany or France you can be fined for insulting the president, denying the holocaust, etc.

I bet the guy who burned a Koran secretly doesn't want Sweden to join NATO. I saw someone on twitter saying someone from Finland should do the same to stop Finland joining NATO to prevent WW3....

I’ve never seen this kind of madness!’ — Croatian president slams German foreign minister’s ‘We are at war with Russia’ remark

Zoran Milanović wished Germany better luck this time around than in World War II, but insisted Croatia would play no part in the conflict.

Croatian President Zoran Milanović has scolded Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock for claiming Europe is now at war with Russia, calling her remarks a “kind of madness.”

Milanović claimed Europe’s apparent declaration of war on Russia was news to him and confirmed that Croatia would in “no way” be dragged into what he referred to as a “proxy war” between NATO and Russia.

The Croatian president then wished Germany, tongue in cheek, better luck this time around following its previous attempt to defeat the Soviet Union in World War II.

“The German foreign minister says we must be united, because I quote, we are at war with Russia. I didn’t know that,” Milanović said. “Maybe Germany is at war with Russia, but then, good luck. Maybe this time it turns out better than 70-odd years ago,” he quipped.

Milanović has been highly critical of the approach taken by Western allies during the Ukrainian conflict, calling sanctions against Russia “absurd” and vowing not to be a “slave to America” by complying with the typical response of many other NATO members.

In his most recent remarks, the Croatian president claimed the provision of Western battle tanks to Kyiv will only prolong the war.

“Russian or American, they burn just the same,” Milanović said of the tanks. “Those tanks may burn, or they may reach Crimea, but Croatia will have nothing to do with it,” he added.

Milanovic’s attitude to the remarks by the German foreign minister was echoed in Hungary with Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó telling reporters on Thursday, “We are not at war with anybody, we do not want to be at war with anybody.

“We want to stay out of this war, and the security of Hungary and the Hungarian people is the most important thing for us.”

Sounds like they have seriously miscalculated if they thought sending tanks when Ukraine is losing that badly is going to make any real difference. In the months it would take to send a fraction of the tanks required, the Russians would have taken more settlements critical to Ukraine.
