Kim Jong Un has proven to be a very clever leader unlike the previous one.

Honestly I believe he's a hawk for China and US to go to war at some point, so he can militarily reunify the Koreas before SK acquires nukes. He's ambitious enough and cares enough about Korean development.

NK is crippled by UN sanctions, which is different from US unilateral sanctions in that said sanctions are legal by international law and have far greater power due to that.

They're looking for a great upset of the status quo in Asia, that can vindicate 2 generations spent building up for war.

North Korea must be the country standing to benefit the most from Russia getting kicked out of UN Security Council. Russia would quit UN as a response and be free to supply NK.

After that time ROC decided to arm their troops with flares for ... some reason. It's even a joke inside ROC where people are saying so they're not allowed to fire MANPAD or AAA at UAV, but now with flares they can 想射就射?

Has the Korean War already become such an obscure footnote in the realm of history that nobody remembers anymore the exact same sentiment from MacArthur when he told Truman on Wake Island: "The boys will be home by Thanksgiving" because Mao was absolutely bluffing, that the then 2 year-old PRC that had so much more to lose wouldn't go to war against a US that was the singular dominating power freshly victorious from a worldwide war, with a 16-nation UN coalition at its beck and call?

Guess what MacArthur later said when the PVA did cross the Yalu River?

"Well... if we go fast enough, maybe some of the boys can be home by Christmas".
