Nancy Pelosi to visit Taiwan next month amid China tensions

Trip will mark first in 25 years by a Speaker of the US House of Representatives
Six people familiar with the situation said Pelosi would take a delegation to Taiwan in August. The 82-year-old California lawmaker cancelled a previous visit in April after she caught Covid-19.
The Chinese embassy in the US said China “resolutely opposes all forms of official contact between the US and Taiwan”. Spokesperson Liu Pengyu said a visit by Pelosi to Taiwan would “severely impact the political foundation of China-US relations and send aseriously wrong signal to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces”.

Three people familiar with the situation said the White House had expressed concern about the trip. The timing is sensitive for China because it will come in the same month as the August 1 anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army.
The same month as the anniversary of the PLA lol

Yes. Only idiots believe in peace when history has shown that in every single occasion in world's history, there is a war when a rising superpower challenges the established superpower/hegemon. You can't deny reality any longer

Is strained China-US relationship spiralling towards a Thucydides Trap scenario?

“Instead of working together towards a path to avert a potential conflict, China and the US have been sinking deeper into the Thucydides Trap, effectively making it a self-fulfilling prophecy,” said Pang Zhongying, an international affairs expert at Sichuan University.
Most Chinese and overseas observers agree that the Taiwan issue still poses the biggest risk of armed confrontation between China and the US and its key allies, such as Japan, especially with Biden’s White House seemingly inching away from the US’ traditional position of strategic ambiguity.

Xi is expected to meet Biden in a virtual summit in the coming weeks, according to the US leader, which observers hope will help set up guardrails to prevent their adversarial ties from spiralling out of control.
Meet, talk about peace, respect One-China policy bla bla bla, and then Pelosi visits Taiwan...

The temporary caretaker government on the Island of Taiwan has spent millions dollars on DC lobbyists, to get a phone call with Trump when the Orange Führer got elected, paid 6 figures to get their pseudo ambassador into the inauguration ceremony. Paid another 6 figures to have that formal lard-ass Mike Pompeo to pay a visit this year.

They have spent millions tax payers' money to lobby the congress ( one can only lobby the congress, not the executive branch), that's why we see one after another Taiwan support bills being proposed by idiots in congress from both parties. Do you really believe those cunts can find Taiwan on a map. And also that's why they keep coming to Taiwan either try to sell craps from their own state, or getting paid for their re-election campaign funds.

It costs next to nothing for member of congress to propose a bill, they got paid hundreds thousands by Taiwan government with tax-payers money. Go figure why those cunts keeps coming to 'visit' Taiwan and show 'support'.

This interview is of astonishing quality, at least in terms of its breadth and scope of discussion.

I can't comment on specifics, like the biological research, which is out-of-reach.

But his talk about the dissolution of the USSR matches what I've read elsewhere. Ukrainians were told by then-leadership that they were being 'exploited' by USSR/Russia. They were being 'held back' in their development. And that once they were independent, they would be on the path to prosperity.

In fact, Ukraine was heavily subsidized, especially in terms of energy as the PM describes. How was an "independent" Ukraine going to be more prosperous than before, if it had to pay the real cost of food, energy, and other inputs from the former USSR? How could Ukraine 'become Germany?' And as this PM asks, should that even be a real goal?

It matches up with how craven the EU pitch was. Just spend an impossible amount of money bringing industry to "EU standards," or easier yet, just give up on having industry. EU did not want industrial competition from Ukraine. It was to be an EU colony. So many lies and wishful thinking to bring Ukraine over to the 'West,' and we see the results today.
This is the exact same stuff they told Chinese. Just make those shoes, don't worry about aerospace, your products may be nice but they 'just don't fit the western standards'. And in the 1980's, they were believed!

because Deng ordered that it was an "inefficient throwback to Maoism".

Instead China was to license build 'advanced' McDonnell Douglas planes.

despite thousands of planes being ordered. McDonnell Douglas then went out of business in the 90's, meaning those planes became abandoned tech with no support. China then had no domestic civilian aerospace industry at all. Chinese are still paying for this fateful decision.

Then you have the automotive case, too much to write about. That is how close China came to becoming Ukraine.

MDD was bought out by Boeing, it was later renamed B717, never unsupported.

You really think that Y-10 would have jumpstarted civilian airliner industry? There would never have been engines back then, plus it was an already outdated design.

It wasn’t too close, most of the government was deeply mistrustful of the West.

Especially the part about the western pettiness regarding regulation of consumer products, this has really shown me how really "Free market" the west really was, i knew the west had ways to protect its internal market. But somehow it never really clicked to me it was mostly petty regulation for middle tech consumer products my main reason was probably agri product and quotas. Because i rarely saw non western consumer products here in Europe.

The Indian economy has shown resilience amid fears of recession and war across the global landscape, the

said on Saturday.
Yeah. We hear you.

Earlier this week, the

marginally eased to 7.1 per cent in June, as compared to 7.04 per cent a month earlier.
India's retail inflation 'eased' from 7.04% to 7.1%? Isn't that increasing by 0.06%? What kind of mathematics is this?

Meanwhile, the annual rate of inflation based on all-India Wholesale Price Index (WPI) stood 15.18 per cent for the month of June - this bucked the three month trend of rise.

In May, the figure had leapt to a

of 15.88 per cent (year-on-year).
Math is correct this time. But how does a Wholesale Price Index of >15% shows the 'resilience' of the Indian economy?

Howabout some perspective:

The consumer price index (CPI) grew

from a year earlier
, flat from April, though still at a six-month high, which reflected rising prices for crude oil, farm produce and material imports.
China’s core CPI, which excludes the volatile prices of food and energy, rose by 0.9 per cent year on year last month, unchanged from April. Headline inflation for the first five months grew by 1.5 per cent, comfortably below the government’s full-year maximum of 3 per cent.
The producer price index (PPI), which measures the prices for products as they leave factories, rose by 6.4 per cent in May, down from a peak of 13.5 per cent in October 2021.

India may not have the worse inflation figures in the world. But comparing that with the dismal inflation figures in the West is really lowering the bar. For India, they only can benchmark themselves with the West, not the best. If the West is doing good, India will compare itself against its smaller South Asian neigbours, especially Pakistan. If the West is doing poorly, then India will gloat that it is doing better than the West. Yeah, that's Jai Hind!
