EU plans spy-proof bunker for secret talks
Plans have been drawn up for an €8 million spy-proof bunker in Brussels, complete with luxury catering, so European Union leaders can hold secret talks over dinner without the Russians listening in.It follows fears that the Kremlin has been listening to top-secret discussions on sanctions and measures to reduce the EU’s dependency on Russian gas. Nato-certified cage would block Russian eavesdropping without skimping on cuisine.
At present, attempts to maintain confidentiality involve European leaders handing in their phones before sensitive summit dinners.
The new chamber will be enclosed in a military-grade insulation cage certified by Nato to militate against the risk of “compromising emanations”. This will stop the Russians, Chinese or others intercepting electromagnetic and radio waves generated by screens and microphone wiring.
The room will hold up to 100 people: 34 leaders and their note-takers, as well as protocol, technical and restaurant staff.
Crucially for Europe’s leaders, who have come to expect a certain quality of food, wine and other refreshments, the chamber will ensure a “suitable level of comfort for VIPs” under plans seen by the website.
The bunker is due to be built by 2024 somewhere in the European Council complex in Brussels, which already hosts summits.
Two Russian spies posing as diplomats who were expelled by Belgium in April were signal interception specialists who were thought to be seeking secrets, including from summits.
Vadim Artyushov, 46, was a veteran of the 47747 wiretap team for Russia’s GRU intelligence service, and Aleksei Kozhevnikov, 36, worked in the Object T-500 unit, which specialises in European and US satellite signals interception.
In 2018 the EU’s diplomatic service warned officials that in some cafés and restaurants Russian or Chinese listening devices could be used to pick up conversations through windows or from other tables.
Why though? US could have just deployed them in Guam instead of somewhere 10 hours of flight away from China?
The problem with this type of "show of force" is irrelevant and have negative effects on those island nations. Economy, health and climate change are their priorities. They are in no danger of any foreign aggression.
