The US is in a mess right now economically, socially and politically. Nothing is working for them at the moment. And they don't have any solutions or answers. They won't admit it but they can feel the crown slipping on their head. As a result they are now increasingly becoming emotional and irrational in their statements and actions. The US right now is like a wounded tiger. Very dangerous.

wounded tiger past his prime age.

Close to Tibet/etc
Lot of CIA agents trying to stir up terrorism to cause trouble for China's BRI

US side is already hinting at closing the one in SF soon, so China will have to reply in kind, maybe Wuhan, Shanghai, I prefer HK...

I saw an interesting comment at FT.

Well it has come to this. We'll be lucky to avoid a hot war given Trump and Xi engaged in a tragic pas a deux. You can't imagine a worse pairing of leaders ensnaring themselves along with the entire world into a Thucydides trap extraordinaire.

How did we get here? A lot of the blame can be placed on the malpractice of sinologists. Medical malpractice may kill just their patients but the malpractice of sinologists can incinerate the whole world.

First and foremost, the well-known, policy-making, policy-influencing sinologists didn't realize until too late that they were dealing with Xi, who is more like Qin Shi Huang or better yet a mob boss with a country, instead of a family. He isn't like Deng, Jiang, or Hu. The comparison should be obvious except to the key sinologists.

Who are these malpracticing sinologists? They are Thomas Fingar, Orville Schell and Liz Economy, who wrote a book about Xi.

Thomas Fingar is the lead policy architect and most to blame. In fact, as a preemptive apologia, here he is defending his record: "Was America’s China Policy a Foolish Failure? The Logic and Achievements of Engagement"
Tom is a smart guy, gifted in analysis, Chinese language and culture, with decades of experience and totally, utterly, catastrophically wrong about Xi and Xi's China.

Then there's Orville Schell, also with a preemptive apologia: "The Death of Engagement"

Orville is another bright, experienced guy with no judgment who compensates with a romanticized view about democratizing China and now acts like a jilted lover. One should see clearly -- even in love.

To complete this triumvirate of dunces, there's Liz Economy, bright, well-known, well-respected and totally out of her depth. No defensive, preemptive apologia...yet.

thanks for the links , good material. Yes the West may have gotten it wrong about Xi, but I'm still unconvinced that Trump or any US Potus after JFK really had/have/has that much power...

Before Trump forced TSMC to ban Huawei, earlier this year in Jan/Feb allegedly Pentagon told him that long term that isn't the best interest of US to cut off Huawei in said manner, but then Trump did it anyway... at least that is the public appearance of the story we are given... Now I think US POTUS doesn't have any real power, he does what he is told. But then why the putting on the show of this sort of back and forth? Like the Dureté dude that kicked out the VFA just to renege on it again, or the Boris/UK huawei multiple flip flop... I can't figure out what the heck is really going on or the purpose of this... it a show to the public if so but for what reason and to what ends?

Petrodollar hegemony still standing, that is what counts. US choking China from tech ascension, that is the big one. Trump acting like dumbass or all the little stuff that US is seemingly doing wrong, those don't mean anything in the grand scheme of things. Where it matters, US always gets it right... (at least so far, or its what it appears anyway)

US has played China and indeed the entire world exceedingly well... its not a coincidence, and you don't do that by incompetence... so whomever is pulling the strings behind the scenes is deliberate and not by accident

It is almost like this whole "America going rogue" is an act to put the rest of the world off tilt and let everyone's guard down but when it comes to what really matters, the truly important stuff and big picture things, it seems the US always gets it right just like clockwork... Are there aliens from future with time machines helping the USA? Sometimes it feels that way...

At the DAVOS early this year Trump was talking about how America had a secret trick or hididden advantage / weapon up their sleeves etc and at first I thought he was hinting at the COVID but now I'm not so sure, take a listen , he hinting at something big?

Any confirmation from this report by Poland news? Last I heard, it was Israeli jets.

U.S. NEARLY STRIKES IRAN PASSENGER JET Earlier today, the US military harassed an Iranian passenger jet, nearly bringing it down. Two US war planes in Syrian airspace made an attack maneuver, nearly striking the Iranian civilian plane which was traveling from Beirut to Tehran. The plane went into a nosedive and had to make an emergency landing. Some passengers where injured. Today's move is indicative of US thuggish behavior against Iran in its so-called 'maximum pressure' campaign. In January of this year, the US assassinated Iran's top general - a national hero - who was in Iraq on a peace mission. In 1953, the US overthrew Iran's democratically elected Prime Minister. More such incidents have occurred. The incident today immediately brings to mind 1988, when the US deliberately attacked Iran Air Flight 655 passenger plane in Iranian airspace. The US Navy, operating just off the coast of Iran, fired a missile killing all 290 aboard, including 66 children. The decision for today's attack may have been an Isreali one. Israel has by far the most powerful lobby in Washington, and uses that power to heavily influence US foreign policy. The result is US military presence in Syria and Iraq, and a belligerent foreign policy toward Iran - the #1 target in Tel Aviv's cross hairs. The US presence in Syria has no authority - not from the US Congress, not from the UN, not from Syria - making it an illegal occupation under any definition. The US is controlling Syrian oil supplies for the benefit of Israel.
