I went to look up the expected US July CPI to see if it could offer any clues on why Biden would do a more that will almost certainly cost his party the midterm, and oh boy, yeah it's bad:

That's after 75 basis point rise last month. With -2.1% real GDP "growth" expected for 2nd quarter thus meeting technical definition of a recession I'm starting to see why.

What else is he going to do increase the interest by 1%? While they have 28 trillion in national debt?
Interest rate hikes take about 4 (IMO more realistically 6) months to start filtering through the economy.

In any case, the damage has already been done. Its all about damage control now. Rates should had been raised from last year

TBH, I think a city not centered around cars is much more livable and bicycles as such use much less space when in road and parked in some shed.

I know for most of Chinese who grew up in the 70s and see the change under Deng think cars are progress, but the fundamental problem is, China has adopted America style mobility with cars, and we all know how good american style things are.

Glad that China moved to HSR, but non automobile mobility needs to get a push again.

Just stop showering and drinking water for a few months man.

Bro, I will start to stop showering immediately and the only liquid I will consume will be die coke.

Funny anecdote, my Unis HPC department has just finished their 2 PetaFLOPS Supercomputer but now they have struggles powering it because the cooling is limited due to heightend electricity prices.

HSR makes sense for China but not so much in the US. Population density and the spread between cities are simply too large to really as effective compared to China. However, public transport like buses still suck lol.

I think HSR would make sense for some places (states) in the US, to connect various big cities, but would not make sense for there to be nationwide fully connected grid.

The one planned line in California honestly seems like that one would make sense at least, but well, we know how well the building of it has been going on lol.

Bicycles actually did receive a big comeback push roughly 5 - 6 years ago.
Cities started rebuilding their bike lanes after taking them out.
This coincided with the bike sharing boom which went way too far and then there were the videos of angry shopkeepers throwing discarded bikes into rivers and stuff. (One extreme to the other)
I haven't looked into it too much since, but I'm sure it's evened out.

HSR makes a lot of sense for California, just compare how a country like spain is doing with similar size, geography, population size, climate and density at around half the gdp/capita. (It's 2nd longest after China)

Nothing wrong with biking/e-biking. Car oriented society is a huge financial and health burdern to individuals. It also creates extremely boring and lonely cities/suburbs. The avg new carpayment is over 700$ in the US, add in gas/insurance/misc, that is likely 1200+ a month just to get around to work. It is something I hope China will avoid copying.
