Danish soldiers were sent to Latvia to deter Putin: ‘We lack everything from ammunition to underpants’

It was with quite a few days’ notice that 350 Danish combat soldiers were sent to Latvia at the beginning of May. The mission was clear: Putin must be deterred. And if the Russian president attacks Latvia, the Danish soldiers must help defend the country.

But in the Danish camp in Latvia, the soldiers now warn that they can not keep their level high for sharp combat.

They have missed important training because the ammunition for training did not follow when the combat battalion went east. Several training activities have been canceled because there has been no ammunition for them, the Defense Command confirms.

"It is ultimately a matter of life and death that the soldiers can train with ammunition", emphasizes Dennis, who is a 1st constable chief constable and joint trust representative for about 300 constables and corporals in the combat battalion in Latvia.

"It makes you fall in level. And if Putin chooses to cross the border into this, then one is not 100 percent ready", says Dennis, who for security reasons does not want his last name to appear in the story.

And it is not only ammunition for training that has been lacking in the camp. The soldiers arrived at dilapidated tents with mold and missing equipment.

"We lack everything from ammunition to underpants to say the least. This is the saddest period I have been in the Armed Forces. And I’ve seen a little of each for 20 years. We want what we are entitled to. When we were in ISAF (NATO Mission in Afghanistan, ed.), We had a high level. Danish soldiers could compete with all other countries. I do not think we can now. Because we’re not allowed to shoot. Basically, we have dropped in level.

Or China could do what I've been saying for ages, refuse to engage with the EU except via a similar international body like the SCO.

Countries within the EU are trading fine with China, problems only when the EU turn up on the door.

Every EU delegation consists of a unelected bureaucrats that most have never heard of. It's easy for them to do this as they aren't accountable to their electorate. Can you imagine the leader of France of Germany saying what these EU representatives say?

The EU as an institution can't claim to have a foreign policy while every member state sits in the UN. If the EU wants to be seen as anything more than an economic union they need to form a real federation and not pretend they are one.
The problem is that individual EU countries cannot negotiate trade deals with other nations since EU is a single market.
China for sure prefers to deal with the likes of Macron, Scholz, and Draghi who are (more or less) pragmatic and more understanding of China instead of the Brussels bureaucrats like Ursula, Borrell, and Michel who tend to be dogmatic ideologues with heavy influence from the US.

Get rekt America

Maybe some of us, like me, haha, are underestimating how things are going.

The United States are at loggerheads with China, and Russia.

Then all these small countries, from the Middle East, to South America, to Oceania, to even Nepal, just don't give a shit what the United States wants.

India too.

Maybe the change in the world is more drastic and is underestimated?

The rise of China, kind of means the rise of the rest, ie the global south.

Did not think that the rest would be dropping or downgrading their US relations that much. The US still has a lot to offer.

Maybe the resentment runs that deep?

sorry, economics is not my field

U.S. in talks with allies on Russian oil price cap, says Yellen

The United States is in talks with Canada and other allies to further restrict Moscow's energy revenue by imposing a price cap on Russian oil, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Monday.

"We are talking about price caps or a price exception that would enhance and strengthen recent and proposed energy restrictions by Europe, the United States, the UK and others, that would push down the price of Russian oil and depress Putin's revenues, while allowing more oil supply to reach the global market," Yellen told reporters in Toronto.

"We think a price exception is also an important way to prevent spillover effects to low income and developing countries that are struggling with high costs food and energy," Yellen said, speaking alongside Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.

Yellen said a price exception is an effective cap that could be achieved through a mechanism to restrict or ban insurance or financing for Russian oil shipments above a certain amount.

The United States, Canada, Britain and some other countries have banned imports of Russian oil, but the European Union remains highly dependent on Russian crude.

Asked if U.S. President Joe Biden planned to seek consensus on an oil price plan at the G7 leaders summit in Germany next week, Yellen said: "We are very active, actively working on this with our partners."

Freeland said Canada "thinks it is a really good idea" to try to limit Russia's oil revenues, but recognizes that this will be challenging for European countries.

"The path forward here is really to be talking with our European partners and to recognize, you know, how central they are in the decision making here," Freeland said, adding that Ukraine needed to be included in any decisions as well.

This means Western sanctions against Russia oil failed, so now they are forming a buying cartel to force Russia to sell its oil at better than friendship price to EU. This price cap has to be cheaper or at least the same as that of selling to China and India so that EU can not be taken advantage of by OPEC, China and India.
