There is some truth to it. If, hypothetically, NATO escalated in lock-step when Russia was deploying troops, AND NATO made it clear that it would defend Ukraine as if Ukraine were a NATO country, then there would be more likely than not that Russia would have backed off. Instead, NATO capitulated even before Russia had issued any nuclear bluff. Therefore, the thesis, that NATO wanted Russia to get bogged down in Ukraine in the first place, has some truth to it. Putin made a bold call. He was right both in reaction as well as in timing. That is also part of the reasons I keep saying, as of now, both Putin and US are winning, except for EU (the biggest loser hands down).
