Why does Putin invade Ukraine?

the break up of the Soviet Union was certainly the best moment in Brezinski's life. he was elated to say that: "Russia cannot be a great power (again) without Ukraine." I think when Putin wrote his "one people" essay last year, he probably had something like that on his mind.

Actually had Ukraine remained neutral I think Putin would have accepted it. Back when Yanukovych was in power they were basically negotiating a trade deal with the EU and EEU both. But the EU wanted the whole hog. The EU did not want to make a deal with the EEU that Russia was in. Too much trouble they said. Too much work. Maybe later. Idiots.

Without an EEU/EU deal if Ukraine signed the EU association agreement as it was they would need to cut preferred trade status with the EEU. Russia was their major trade partner it was like 50% of Ukraine trade. Of course Yanukovych balked at it. But then the West made the coup and took him out.
