As a long time fan of the Toronto Raptors, it's too bad to hear poor treatment of a hard working player like Sonny Weems. The CBA has already come out and said the behavior was embarrassing and unacceptable, so they didn't pretend it didn't happen.
People can get very hyper at sporting events, plus if they were drinking it would exacerbate it. This is no excuse for the behaviour, but measuring whether this is a widespread or common problem. Considering that many black players play in the CBA, and we didn't hear any other such egregious occurrences, it is hopefully a relatively isolated incident. Compare with black football/soccer players getting bananas thrown at them which is common enough that FIFA has levied quite heavy penalties.
As the business ties with Africa and elsewhere increase and strengthen, it will be more and more important to ensure that racism is under control.
