He isn't stupid. The guy lived in the US for most of his life, how do you expect him to feel? 30 years ago, the US was a different place, China was also a different place. You are using the powers of hindsight or expect him to have the powers of future vision.
30 years ago, people like him, talented, gifted, were fully expected to go and pursue these opportunities at places like MIT and hopefully come back or at least collaborate with colleagues who stayed in China. The latter is exactly what he did, so what's his fault?
Yes, the government is against him. However, all his colleagues, the school itself, friends and family were said to be standing behind him. In the end, that is what is most important in life is it not?
