Several killed when foot bridge collapses at Florida university
MIAMI (Reuters) - Several people were killed and cars crushed when a newly installed pedestrian bridge spanning several lanes of traffic collapsed at Florida International University on Thursday in Miami-Dade County, officials said.

"Several people were killed. I just don't know how many," Alejandro Camacho, a spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol said in a telephone interview.

There were at least five to six vehicles crushed underneath the pedestrian crosswalk, he added.

The bridge connects the university with the city of Sweetwater and was installed on Saturday in six hours over the eight-lane highway, according to a story that was posted on the university's website. It was 174 feet (53 m) long and weighed 950 tons.

Television footage showed firefighters were walking across the flattened wreckage and medics were treating injured people. Emergency personnel appeared to be trying to work their way through a hole in the top of the bridge.

Florida just can't catch a break.

From the look of it, it could be either poor concrete used (do a sample core analysis and we will know) or the structural engineer didn't consider thermal expansion/shrinkage. Since there doesn't seem to be a column for support in the middle, the full 50 m bridge thermal expansion/shrinkage will need to occur on the end pillars. Even in places like Florida, a couple degrees would have an effect on the steel/ concrete.

Finland has emerged as the happiest nation in the world in the sixth World Happiness Report.

Norway, which topped the list last year, finished second in the 2018 report, followed by Denmark, Iceland and Switzerland.

The report, prepared by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network for the United Nations, ranks countries on six key variables - income, freedom, trust, healthy life expectancy, social support and generosity.

The 2018 report focusses on migration within and between countries and was released on March 14, a week ahead of the World Happiness Day. It surveyed 156 countries for their happiness levels, and 117 countries to determine the happiness of immigrants.

In Asia, Israel finished first occupying the 11th spot, while United Arab Emirates came second at rank 20, followed by Qatar ( 32 ) and Saudi Arabia ( 33 ).

In East Asia, Taiwan was found to be the happiest nation at rank 26, followed by Singapore ( 34 ). Malaysia ( 35 ), Thailand ( 46 ), Japan ( 54 ) and South Korea ( 57 ).

Philippines finished at 71 and Pakistan at 76.

China is lagging behind its Asian neighbours at 86 in the happiness quotient, while its economic competitor, India is seemingly even more unhappy at rank 133.

Among other Asian nations, Mongolia was ranked at 94, Vietnam at 95, Indonesia, 96, Bhutan – which was once the happiest - at 97, Nepal at 101, Laos, 110, Bangladesh, 115, Sri Lanka, 116, Cambodia, 120 and Myanmar, 130.

The 10 happiest countries also occupied similar spots on being ranked on immigrant happiness. The survey found that those who move to happier countries gained, while those who moved to less happy countries lose.

The United States' ranking dropped four spots this year. It finished at the 18th slot. “US policymakers should take note. The US happiness ranking is falling, in part because of the ongoing epidemics of obesity, substance abuse and untreated depression," the report stated.

Let's not put any stock in the rankings. As stated in its disclosure, the report is done by a bunch of so called experts in their own personal capacities.

IMO, the ranking is laughable. How can one rank Libya (70) ahead of Hong Kong (76), Portugal (77), China (86)? I guess people are happier living in the midst of civil war and Islamic insurgency than those under stable governments.

Here is the actual report if anyone is interested.

I guess the Nobel Prize is normally given to a scientific study that is experimentally verifiable. How do you verify a theory of a multi dimensional universe with curved space and time?, lol, bearing in mind scientists get it wrong all the time with their theories and there is an inherent difficulty in formulating experiments to verify such theoretical study.

Have you seen the slums of HK? or the size of the avg. dwelling there? keep in mind that contentment and happiness is directly tied a state of a person’s mind and you are also looking at the stats through YOUR lens.
In reality a Muslim goat herder with 10 kids could very well be much happier in some forsaken place in Libya than the stressed out financial analyst who just put in a 70 hr week in HK while his boss is still yelling at him as he tries to sleep in his 150 sq fr. apt in Kowloon with barking dogs and nosey neighbors.

The criteria of "happiness" can also be suspect therefore that poll is as well. It smell of geopolitical gaming all over it.

In many ways the old proverb ignorance is bliss holds true for happiness and contentment. For someone without ambition, curiosity and knowledge outside his immediate surroundings, happiness is easier to achieve and maintain until the day when the outside world comes inevitably knocking.
