Serious question. Can they even recover their economy? Their GDP in 1995 was bigger than now. Can they even afford increasing military spending?
They have about 500 000 exiting the workforce each year (another reason why demographics are important), and the old-dinosaurs live comfortably while they have the young people to work like slaves.

When you have a docile population then economic results aren't something you would worry about. Japanese have elected the same party for over 50 years now .There is no public accountability in & hence LDP is under no pressure to produce economic results (one can even argue they're beyond a pint of recovery). So military is the best way to instill jingoism amongst the people . They'll increase military expenditure and cut down on welfare.

That's some final warning talk from China... US should take note

The Taiwan question is the ultimate red line of China. In order to reduce the risk of a strategic collision between China and the US, the latter must take a step back from the Taiwan question and show its restraint.
The US is targeting China's core interests, causing fundamental tensions in bilateral relations. Washington must understand that it has gone too far, leaving China with no way back
As news about military cooperation between Washington and the island continues to emerge, how come this is only a "competition?" We cannot understand what the US side is doing while at the same time it is preaching about preventing the China-US competition from escalating into conflict.
We increasingly feel that trying to figure out Washington's logic is a waste of time, and that force seems to work better than reasoning with the US side.
Next, let's put the final warning thing to People's Daily and make it official :)

No, no, and no. There's a very popular Netflix show on these few weeks called Japan is Sinking.

When was the last time you watched a show called Japan is Doing Great!

Or what about All's Well on the Japanese Front

. However, I very much doubt that Japan could become some economic powerhouse - their economy is essentially stagnant even when compared to other developed countries. South Korea will probably soon surpass them in per capita terms.

How??? Japan is an aging country with lots of old population, and population is also shrinking with low birth rate...these two factors alone are telling their economy prospect in future. Their economic rise was killed off by their master in 1985 thru the Plaza Accord.
Unlike in the past, Japan's competitiveness is decreasing nowadays. Both South Korea and China eat up their market share and push them aside at various levels. Managing their decline in orderly fashion may be the solution. But if they opt to play hostile against China then I don't know how they will manage their economy.

In the last several years Japan attempted to increase their service sectors, being aggressive in tourism biz by very actively promoting for international market: more relaxed visa (in 1990s Japan's visa was very strict), discounted air ticket price to visit Japan, etc. I visited Hokkaido in autumn 2019 with my wife. Still Japan is an expensive country to visit compared to other parts of Asia: hotel, meal, transport (even with the international railway pass) are more costly than other Asia. Hospitality and services are good. And cost for dinner meal is higher than lunch meal. This pandemic should hit their economy very hard.
