Aside of that their fuel tax is sky high for their economic level, close to western Europe's tax!
I heard they hiked em up since their tax collections were lacking.

There is left wing of LDP who is realist and tend to be pro China But they are weak and generally overruled by the conservative wing who is still nurture dream of great Japan. That is the problem with Japanese politic when logic dictate that they should ally with China because their future prosperity depend on it. They might miss the historical boat In few years China will be so strong it does not need Japan at all

The Conservative wing headed by Abe is just a bunch of American stooges, lol. Basically, the entire foreign policy under Abe during Trump's era was Abe sucking up to Trump trying to win some favors.
