THE REAL CIVIL-MILITARY FUSION. Chinese military companies make the bulk of their money in the civilian market. They don't need perpetual war to be profitable.

I'm really surprised by Norinco and Boeing. What civilian stuff does Norinco sell to make that much money? And I thought Boeing's civilian sales revenue would dwarf that of its military one.

Apparently there's a lot.

China North Industries Corporation (hereinafter referred to as "Norinco") is a large multinational enterprise with a core focus on international operations. Its revenue sources are diversified, spanning multiple sectors such as defense products, resource development, international engineering contracting, and civilian products. Below is an analysis of its main revenue sources and business segments:

1. Defense Products and Military Trade

Norinco is a pioneer and leader in China's military trade industry. Its defense products cover multiple high-tech fields, including:
  • Precision strike weapon systems: Such as missiles and guided weapons.
  • Amphibious assault equipment and long-range suppression systems: Including armored vehicles and artillery.
  • Air defense, anti-missile, and night vision information technologies: Involving radar, electronic warfare equipment, and night vision devices.
  • Small arms and anti-terrorism equipment: Such as rifles and bulletproof gear.
These products have strong competitiveness in both domestic and international markets, particularly in countries along the "Belt and Road" initiative.

2. Oil and Mineral Resource Development

Norinco collaborates with domestic and international enterprises to engage in the exploration, development, and trade of oil and mineral resources, forming a unique industrial operation model. Examples include:
  • Oil business: Achieving large-scale production in projects such as the East Baghdad oil field in Iraq.
  • Mineral development: Such as the copper-cobalt mine project in the Democratic Republic of Congo, promoting efficient resource utilization.
This segment is a key pillar of the company's resource-based income.

3. International Engineering Contracting and Infrastructure Projects

As a major player in international operations, Norinco has undertaken numerous overseas infrastructure and energy projects. Notable examples include:
  • Senj Wind Farm in Croatia: A benchmark project in the renewable energy sector.
  • Lahore Orange Line Metro in Pakistan: Promoting the export of China's rail transit technology.
  • Nam Phay Hydropower Station in Laos: Supporting local energy infrastructure development.
These projects have not only enhanced the company's international influence but also driven revenue from related equipment exports and technical services.

4. Specialized Civilian Products

Norinco has a broad business layout in the civilian sector, including:
  • Optoelectronic products: Such as laser equipment and optical instruments.
  • Civil explosive chemicals: Covering the production and sales of explosives and chemical materials.
  • Sports equipment and vehicle manufacturing: Including special-purpose vehicles and sports gear.
Through technological innovation and market expansion, these businesses have established strong competitiveness.

5. Strategic Emerging Industry Investments

In recent years, Norinco has actively invested in emerging industries, such as:
  • Semiconductor equipment: Its subsidiary, Naura Technology Group (002371), a leading domestic semiconductor equipment manufacturer, achieved revenue of 14.688 billion yuan in 2022, with core products including etching machines and thin-film deposition equipment, benefiting from the trend of domestic substitution.
  • New energy and new materials: Involving technology R&D and industrialization in fields like photovoltaics and energy storage.

Revenue Structure and International Layout

  • High degree of internationalization: In 2024, overseas revenue accounted for over 95% of the company's total income, with overseas profits, assets, and personnel proportions ranking among the top domestic large multinational corporations.
  • Diversified market structure: Its business covers more than 130 countries worldwide, with deep cooperative networks established particularly in countries along the "Belt and Road" initiative.

Norinco's revenue structure reflects a diversified strategy of "military trade + resources + engineering + civilian products." Through technological innovation and international expansion, the company has transitioned from traditional trade to industrial and capital operations. In 2024, its sales revenue exceeded 219 billion yuan, and future investments in semiconductors, new energy, and other fields will further enhance its global competitiveness. So Canada isn’t allowed to retaliate but the US can do whatever they want.

Trump “We don’t need Canadian Energy.”

Also Trump, “I will shortly be declaring an national emergency on electricity”

"Ontario just announced a 25% surcharge on "electricity," of all things, and your not even allowed to do that," he wrote.

It is not entirely clear what Trump meant by saying Ontario is "not even allowed to do that."
