Movie producer Harvey Weinstein was notorious for getting successful new filmmakers to sign contracts with him to make movies for him and then doing nothing with them. Weinstein was actually stopping potential competition to his movies. He would lock them into contracts so they can't go make their own movies or movies for someone else and all it cost Weinstein was a signing fee.
There are those in the US who want to lure Chinese STEM talent away from China but they also don't trust Chinese in their R&D labs. This could be how the US keeps Chinese scientists and engineers out of the game.
I was watching 60 Minutes and was thinking how they were so excited about OpenAI and ChatGPT developments that they literally did two stories reporting on it months apart from one another. Normally they just do one story and move on to the next subject. It's been over two months since DeepSeek and not one story of the AI that rocked Silicon Valley and changed the AI landscape around the world forever.
