Exclusive: Chinese lithium company halts tech exports as trade tensions build

  • Jiangsu told customers it would halt exports of lithium processing tech from February 1
  • China announced a proposal for export controls last month
  • Proposal is having a "chilling effect" across industry, lawyer says

told customers last month it would stop exporting a piece of filtration equipment known as a sorbent from February 1, according to a source with direct knowledge of the matter and documents seen by Reuters.
China is the world's largest producer of sorbents, used to extract lithium from brines or other solutions containing the battery metal, although its market size can be difficult to ascertain given Beijing's reticence to share data, analysts say.
The decision by Jiangsu shows Beijing's threat, made public in January, to

of some battery and lithium technology, including sorbents, is changing behaviour even though the change is for now only a proposal. If approved, companies would need government licenses for overseas sales.

An executive at another lithium extraction technology company, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said Jiangsu and Sunresin New Materials

another major sorbent producer, are negotiating with the government over the proposal.

China punches back hard with export restrictions.

Goddam European are so stupid and entitled. I have been reading comments regarding the sudden America shift to Russia over the last few days. There have been a few people that go "we need to shift to China to respond to this" and they immediately get dogpiled by dozens of comments going "Why would we partner with China, they are helping Russia, China is evil, Europe stronk- don't need China" and comments like that. They have no concept of hedging, fence sitting, playing hard to get, or realpolitik, something we in SEA have mastered, balancing both China and America to get benefits from both.

1) China has been pretty hands off with helping Russia. If China had provided Russia with substantial amounts of weapons and technology, even at 1/10th the scale that America and Europe are doing for Ukraine, Russia could have won the war by now.
2) China has helped Europe quite a bit, selling them the solar panels and EVs that will help them reduce their dependence on Russia oil, selling them the cotton and nitroglycerin needed for artillery production and selling Ukraine lots and lots of FPV drones. If China really wanted to fuck Europe over, they could have nudged the war heavily in Russia's favor via strict export controls.

They really don't understand realpolitik. Why should China go out of it's way to help Europe contain Russia, when Europe has been helping America contain China for decades? Why should China throw it's major ally into the dirt when Europe has been proven time and time again to be an unfriendly nation, that will likely go crawling back to America once Trump is gone? How about Europe starts selling EUV machines to China and allowing Chinese bases in Europe and then maybe China will be willing to actually put in effort into helping Europe, instead of a one sided relationship where China reins in Russia only for Europe to backstab China once their American masters ask them to.

And they don't seem to understand that being basically American vassals is what allows Americans to treat them like the dogs that they are. Because as bad as things are, Europe will likely just come crawling back to America once the heat dies down. Or when Trump finishes his 4 years. If Europe actually had a serious chance of flipping to China, to selling them EUV machines, to allowing Chinese bases in the region, America/Trump would be a lot more careful in their rhetoric. Just look at SEA, we have a decent chance of just outright flipping to China entirely, so America usually treats us very carefully.
