You laugh but actually what's happening is very much on point for Mao's days. Whenever people from ROC army defect to 8th Route Army the first thing the commissar would do is to gather them all in one place and ask each of them to talk in term why they decided to turn and join 8th Route Army instead of ROC:
After they let out all the abuses they suffered under ROC people very quickly developed a class consciousness and understood that they're all in it together and what CPC is fighting for. And it always worked because capitalism in general and ROC's feudal-capitalism in particular is a fucked up system that dehumanises people.
This is just an online version of 诉苦大会. One the one hand the effect is not as good since it's not run by commissars well read on capitalism vs communism and not in person, but on the other hand comparing cost of living in a "what could have been" way enhances the effect.
