That's how Trump ended up selecting JSOC Gen. Mark Milley (ret.) over the objection of his then SECDEF Jim Mattis. He (Trump) selected Milley to spite Mattis and since in his indominable expertise on pretty much anything, Milley fit the central casting of what an Army General should look like.
Yes, but as we have seen, Trump soon turns on his own choices if they are anything other than abject yes-men that do anything he agrees to while staying in the background. If these people start taking attention away from Trump, Trump turns on them. Trump historically has never shown any loyalty towards his followers, while demanding everything in return.
That is why I think Elon Musk and Trump will have a total falling out (if they have not already). Both have egos and both want attention.
