The students (about 100 or less) decided to bicycle themselves in the wee hours of the night to morning and drive to that ancient town to get a taste of some apparently delicious local delicacy. It was posted on Weibo and it became a trend, which attracted a lot of students to essentially do the same thing. The local government of course was elevated since visitors that come to their smallish pop (by Chinese standards) because that equals ¥¥¥ to the local business and tourism. The local officials even made conscious effort to accommodate the influx of young visitors.
However, the numbers have ballooned to the level where it's creating an inconvenience to the local people due to traffic, noise and other host of challenges that comes with extra thousands of young people that have now deluge their town/city...
Then, people like that twig and his masters essentially decided to do a disinfo and misinformation campaign which will find a wide audience in the west and within China itself (HANJIANS) that are ready to regurgitate Anti-China fake news out of desperation due to their political dogmas and insecurity.
