Mastering ICE vehicles means cheaper life cycle cost in all world conditions (re export business without official warranty) and parts availability that spans decades. Mercedes is CLA is a niche vehicle that is neither cheap nor reliable for its class.
Germany got temporary wealthy by building disposable expensive vehicles/parts that drove its trade surpluses but that cooperative world is gone. and it is not just Germany but this complex vehicle supply chains of auto business have bankrupted EU now it has to face both Soft power and hard power.
