It is not surprising. Brazil for whatever reason is always skittish about that part of their border. It is the location of one of their major wars in the XIXth century I think. There are poor road connections from where people live to that part of the Amazon so it was always hard to guard that border.

Venezuela and Brazil have never been at war, though. Their southern border with Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina is the hot one.

The issue is that Maduro did pull some shady shit during the last elections, with Brazil and Colombia trying to clarify what was going on, what went wrong and mediate which is also Brazil stepping into its role of the regional power(and BRICS representative).

Maduro's party decided to be a bitch about it all, insulting every Brazilian envoy accusing them of working for the CIA and the US, which is funny considering Maduro's government is constantly negotiating with the US backstage despite all his blustering, to keep Chevron in the country as they are the main ones extracting oil from the country because PDVSA has been completely gutted through corruption to the point it doesn't produce much anymore.

At this point in time, Venezuela is more of a dead weight than anything, and a black hole of Russian and Chinese funds as the government has stolen money from several joint funds and loans, which I guess it is why China and Russia weren't too bothered by Brazil's veto. So either Maduro gets his shit together or gets replaced, or things won't change much.

"The People's Bank of China and the Bank of Japan agreed to renew their bilateral currency swap deal amounting to 200 billion yuan (about $28.13 billion), or 3.4 trillion Japanese yen. The agreement will be valid for three years and can be extended by mutual consent."

"China is strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposes the United States' move of adding six Chinese entities to its "entity list" and three to its "unverified list" based on so-called military and Iran-related issues.

Such actions have undermined the security and stability of the global industrial and supply chains and China will take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its enterprises, the Ministry of Commerce said on Monday."

That's almost 1000 years after it was founded

Civilisations change. But a simple change of religion doesn't have to mean a loss of culture. Like Buddhism was sinicised in China, Christianity, an anti imperial and pacifist religion of the poor, was turned into an imperialist religion by the Roman emperor and used for holy wars against the Persians.

If you want an example of a truly lost civilization, it's Egypt. Modern Egyptians are culturally Arab and have lost all connection with ancient Egyptian culture. But not all Muslim countries have become Arab and not all Christian countries have lost their roots. Roman culture lives on in architecture and art styles, language and institutions like law and political organisation like the Roman senate or even in sports, which have arenas following the roman tradition.

Of course Roman and European history in general is comparatively short, with only less than 3000 years of civilisation. But it's not necessary to claim it's not continuous, when it obviously is. Truly lost civilizations are Egypt, the Phoenicians, probably the Babylonians, the inka and Aztecs where descendants by blood still exist but they're fully assimilated into foreign cultures
I am not being harsh when I say Romans are short lived. All its succesor had little ethnic connection or geographical conmection, only carry a fraction of its culture.

The best you could argue was goth Romans were the inheritor of the empire. Despite ethnic replacement, it carried the similar culture and geographical area. Consider it as equivalent of Qing and Yuan dynasty to China. It is a better candidate than Byzantine who had similar cultural heritage, but different geographical area and different ethnicity. When Byzantine destroyed last of goth Romans but failed to reclaim it, the last vestige of Romans is pretty much dead.

If China disintegrate like Romans and Indians adopt interpreted Chinese culture, confucious idea after 500 years, but still live in India speaking Hindu. Would you call their claim to Holy Chinese Empire legit?

Or China adopt interpreted ancient egyptian culture and religion and say "behold, Holy Egptian Empire"

Lastly Greeks lasted longer than Romans, started earlier, still the same ethnicity in their ancient land, just lost independence from time to time. Why not claim heritage of Greeks? You know, origin of democracy, western philosophy, and etc? It even live on today in some form.

"Chinese K-pop fans turn to Hong Kong to evade S. Korean content ban
By Caroline Tam, KYODO News

With the relationship between China and South Korea strained in recent years, K-pop fans in mainland China have been flocking to Hong Kong to evade Beijing's unofficial ban on South Korean cultural content.

Over the past year, the semiautonomous Chinese region has hosted a variety of K-pop concerts and events, including major music festival K-CON and performances by idol groups SHINee and F.T. Island.

In early September, thousands of dedicated fans from across China attended a concert of K-pop group Super Junior in Hong Kong, showing an unwavering commitment to their idols even as the city battled the second-strongest tropical cyclone in the world this year."
